I bought one of AG's 2008 Texas Ranger knives and absolutely love it. I have carried nearly daily in a DM Bullard belt pouch. I just recently bought the 2009 knife and it arrived today. I opened the box and just about had an accident in my shorts...this thing is big! I didn't even think to look at the size when I ordered...just thought it would be about the same size as the 2008 knife. I was wrong to say the least.

Closed - 5 5/8 inches
Blade - 4 11/16 inches 8Cr15MoV
OAL - 10 3/8 inches

I am loving this knife! It, like the 2008 knife, comes with belt sheath tho i prefer an open top pouch. This thing locks open with the authority of a bank vault locking. Despite it's size it feels great in the hand as well. Now for a few pics...

With it's "little" brother...

and for a size comparison here it is with a Case 6265

One of the things I really like about the 2008 is the thumb nick is big and deep enough to easily thumb open one handed. Well the long pull an the 2009 is also deep enough to allow it to be easily opened with one hand as you can see in the video of my ugly hand...lol.

AG has some of these in his seconds section...btw I still can't find the cosmetic blemish on mine. If you like big knives don't pass this one up.

btw...the 2010 is soon available as well....and this time AG picked a whale of a pattern...a swell center Sunfish. This one is a bit smaller with a 3 5/16 inch blade.

"Thats not a knife..."

Thats a Sword!

Nice one. I had wondered how those were built...

I saw them on sale in the "Seconds" page, and had to pick one up, as well. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive, and was tempted to pick up the 2008, as well, but grabbed his Hawk bill, instead.

The new 2010 one is a hefty 10.1 ozs, though smaller in length, and is probably going to make it's way into my hands eventually.:D

I'm liking the way A. G. is headed with these PROC knives.

Well Dad saw my 2009 tonite, it carried beautifully in the back pocket of my Levis...standing upright with just a lanyard hanging out to grab. He ordered a 2008 and a 2009 from the seconds page.

I just think the way everything is proportioned on this is great, in a pic by itself it looks to be a normal sized 4 inch knife. The bolsters, pull, swedge...everything is in proportion.

Now I was obligated to buy these as I am a Native Born Son of Texas, a Citizen of the El Paso Empire but even you non-Texans will enjoy these knives.

You just had to show me that didn't you.:D:thumbup:

Are you sure that's not a mini machete? :D BTW that is a beautiful knife. to big for my hands and liking but it is a great looking knife.

Good lookin knives! Both G10? AG says they found a supplier other than Camillus, implying domestic and said cheaper than Cam. Wonder who that could be? Wouldn't be CSC or GEC. Utica or Kabar?

If you are referring to the scales the 2008 is ebony rucarta and the 2009 is black rucarta. Rucarta is AG's version of micarta I am sure. The ebony is jet black without visible grain while the black shows the grain.

Very good pix thanks:thumbup:

That thing is monster, maybe it should come with Mammoth scales:D

I do like big knives and so far these new Texas Ranger commemorative knives have really tickled my fancy. I always carry a small slippie in my pocket but I like having a locking blade in a belt pouch as well. The addition of a nail nick large enough to allow thumbing the blade open is a great bonus as well. The 2010 has the same nick as the 2008 so it will be thumbable as well. As for the size, everyone knows things are always bigger in Texas!

These are not domestic. Made in China. Don't know who specifically the maker is.

I played with one of these the other day while talking knives with A. G.. Fantastic knife. The fit and finish of these knives that A.G. is having made in China is just amazing. The hawkbill Beak that I purchased last Thursday is the finest lockback I have seen in a long time. This knife, made here, would cost at least $150-$200.

Clayton

To me a well made knife is a well made knife regardless of *country of origin*. I own knives made in Germany, Japan, Russia, Italy, etc. To me it is the itself knife that matters. The fit and finish on these it outstanding and I am eagerly looking forward to buying the 2010 pattern.

* I would not, of course, buy any products from a nation that is seeking the overthrow of the US.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't see "grain" in the first which is why I asked about G10. And didn't mean to stir the China pot Thought there might be a maker out there I wasn't aware of or not thinking of.

Maybe I am overly sensitive to the issue...lol. But Rather than where is it made being the first question I prefer how well is it made. Unless you are a screaming racist country of origin shouldn't really matter.

I have been eyeing that hawkbill since AG intro'ed it in the catalog. could you post a pick of it with a standard pattern knife like a sodbuster so I can get an idea of it's size?

I have to ask.
As you have probably guessed, I'm fascinated by the Elephant toe, Sunfish pattern.
I don't have one yet and with the prices I've seen, it will be a while before I can afford one.
Would this be a reasonable or even good one to start a collection with?

I don't see why it wouldn't be. In the knife world the name AG Russell is well known and respected, many of his knives have increased in value over the years. I bought mine as users and have been using them but I don't abuse knives and I am sure casual usage will not harm the value much. I am eagerly looking forward to getting my 2010 model of the Texas Ranger knife.

I reported above that my Dad had ordered both the 2008 and 2009 models from the seconds page...both were sold out. He is ordering a 2009 from the regular page, I hope he gets one. Only a 1000 of each are being made.
