AG Russell Peanut

... I don't care much for a pen blade on peanuts, as the main blade is so small already,

Huh? What?
The main blade on a peanut is almost the same size as the main blade on a medium stockman!!
I don't think many people realize that.

I would love to get some G Russels traditionals with VG-10... no shipping over seas though... beautiful peanuts

I was checking these out on the AG site. They must have the weights wrong. They list the mammoth one at 4.8 oz and the stag or quince at 3.6 oz. If true, those are darned heavy peanuts! I just weighed my full size Case Trapper and it is 4.1 oz.

I don't think the listed weight is accurate. I don't have a scale for a precise measurement but it feels a little heavier than a yellow delrin Case peanut and less than the chestnut swayback jack. Some sites list the peanut at 1.2oz and the swayback at 2.2 oz.

Duncan,

I think I read on A.G.'s website that the knife is fabricated in Japan and final assembly takes place at A.G. Russell's facility in Arkansas, U.S.A.
Thanks Rick, my apologioes as I havent been on the site to check, I will this weekend...thank you

Regarding the origin of manufacture, here's an excerpt from A.G.'s description of the mammoth-scaled peanut on the site (bold added for emphasis):

"The Peanut is produced by hand with tremendous attention to detail by one of the finest knife shops in Japan. The 2-1/8" Clip Point main blade and the 1-5/8" Wharncliffe blade are made of just under 3/32" thick (0.078) VG-10 stainless cutlery steel at 59-61 Rc. The liners, deeply pinched bolsters, caps and shields are exquisitely finished stainless steel. Beautiful fit and finish in every part of the knife. Measures 2-3/4" closed and weighs approximately 4.8 oz. Made in Japan and finished in Rogers, Arkansas."

I'm guessing the "finished in Rogers, Arkansas" is probably hafting/sanding/buffing, and maybe handle scales (see reference to the Dogleg Trapper w/pearl scales, below).

Here's an excerpt from the description of the Quince and Stag Peanuts (bold again added for emphasis):
"The A. G. Russell™ Pinched Peanut is the second traditional slip joint folder in a series being made for us by one of the few makers in Seki, Japan still producing folders completely in Japan. The first knife produced in this series was the A. G. Russell™ Dogleg Trapper, available with Cocobolo (RUS-JT13-CO) or European Stag (RUS-JT13-ES) handle scales and a limited number with premium white Mother-of-Pearl added in our shop."

David, once again my friend thank you, I am looking forward to getting on the site to have a good read.

You're welcome, Duncan.

I replied earlier, that I'd been ogling these little wonders. Lately, I've directed some of my 'obsession' towards small/medium jacks. Even bought a trio of old Case knives, which included a 1940 - 1964 yellow Peanut, and a 1970 (10-dot) stag Peanut. The 3rd one was a '65 - '69 62055 'Cigar' jack. I need to spend more $$$ like I need a (much deeper) hole in my wallet, but I'm really tempted by one of the these, too.

Oh dear - now that is a nice thing

Not a Moki product, is it?

The Dogleg Trapper is a nice thing too

Gah that is a very nice looking peanut! I still have to get myself a peanut and if I had the cash that ivory looks VERY nice, sort of marbled looking. Hit the nail on the head with those swedges, a lot of the peanuts on the market that I've been looking at seem to lack or have a very poor looking swedge.

Thanks guys, last time I checked was while ago, there was some knife I tried to order but it was no overseas shipping or similar was available then. Its ben quite while though. I need to check now AG Russell now about that peanut and few other things.
