Joe,

Just received an e-mail from AG Russell (their weekly specials offering) and in describing a 6" Buck fixed blade in BG-42, this statement is made:

"Included is the Buck Special with a 6" blade of BG42. This item is not at a special price. But there are limited quantities since Buck has discontinued use of the BG42 Stainless Steel."

What is this all about?????

Buck discontinued production of their Master Series line with green checkered grips, silver colored trim, and BG-42 blades back in the Spring of this year. They still make the high end Chuck Buck signature series knife out of BG42. Their primary BG42 product right now is the semi-custom 110's that you can get through Pete's Custom Knifeshop on their website. For $125 you can get a 110 with BG42 blade and stag grips. I expect more BG42 products, but they need to find the ones that they can do profitably.

PS. I got one of the last Buck Vanguard Master Series from AG Russel. It's great!

Jeff,

I didn't check out what model Russell was offering. No doubt you're right that it's one of the Master Series. But I still wonder at their statement. Especially given the committment to produce the 532 in BG-42 with ironwood handle slabs in the spring of 2000.

By the way I have S/N 22 of that custom Buck signature model as well as one of the first PCKS 110's (I was one of the six beta-testers of the site). Both are in BG-42 . I should have grabbed one of those Master Series Vanguards too. I think it is one of the best fixed blade designs Buck produces. You've got a great blade there.

I'm still interested in hearing from Joe, Chuck or Pete. Has Buck told its distributors and major retailers that BG-42 will only be used in special editions?

AG Russell still has two models of Buck Master Series shown in stock. The 6" bladed "Buck Special" and the Vanguard.

I just picked up some of those BG42 Bucks. They are the 119 Special and the 192 Vanguard. Green Frenchwood handles, nickle silver hilts and caps with BG42 blades. They are nice. I like the way the handles are done without the checkering. Really classy looking knives.

The blades are marked MS (for Master Series) but they are not the full master series design.

What I think happened is there were a bunch of parts left over when the MS run was complete and Buck just used those parts to make up these knives and kept making them 'till the parts were gone. There are 110s, 119s and 192s.

Whatever the case there aren't a lot of them. They are cheaper than the MS knives were too, although they're still kind of pricy. (I don't know what A.G. Russel is asking for theirs.)

I ordered three each of them at first and when I saw them I immediately ordered three more of each. I got 20 of the 110s. I'm keeping one of each for myself. They will be on display in the store. Too bad there weren't any 532s or 501s. I would have liked to have gotten those too.

P.S. To my knowledge, Buck isn't discontinuing the use of BG42 on their premium knives. It is only on these knives that they have stopped using it. The parts are all used up.

I really need to get online at home so i don't miss these threads over the weekend!

To answer the various questions:
A.G was refering to the Master Series when he stated that we were discontinuing the use of BG-42.
We DID have overruns of certain blades of the Master Series and instead of tossing the BG-42 blades, we decided to finish the knives out. Get them while you can!
A quick look through our 2000 catalogue rough draft (no i can not send you one!

,shows 3 model 532's in BG-42 and a whole slug of knives in ATS-34.

Hope this helps

The Y2K catalogs aren't out yet so I don't have that information right now. As soon as I get it I'll pass it on. I have heard that there is some neat stuff coming out though.

All I have right now is there will be a 3% price increase on 1/1/00.

Dennis,

I know price increases are never good news however please remember that Buck did not take a price increase in 99 and another fact is that with the new economy, and the steel industry winning a major importation-duty-customs decision that raises the tariff on imported steel. Our steel prices are going up into the double digit increases.

This will be reflected across the industry.

I understand, CJ. I wasn't pointing fingers, just lamenting the fact.

I know about the price of steel and you're right, it's happening across the industry. It's amazing to me how some of the other manufacturers are managing to increase my costs "without raising their prices".

At least with your increase the retail prices can follow the wholesale price bump. Some of the others have fixed it so the retail stays the same but our dealer costs rise. Their profits increase, the consumer pays the same and us dealers eat the difference. That is NOT what I had in mind when I started this business. It's also a real eye-opener to see what a low opinion some of these makers have of the people who sell their stuff. They are doing us such a BIG favor to "allow" us to be dealers.

Oh well, I guess I can always use that display space to put in more Buck Knives. I already have more than any other storefront in the San Diego area. (Except, maybe, the factory). I guess that comes from the fact that Buck is such a great company to do business with. Along with Chris Reeve and REKAT, there aren't any better manufacturers to work with.

Sounds like some great stuff coming down the pipe, I think Buck is going to be real busy trying to keep up with demand for these new products. Thanks for bringing back the 532s.

Joe,

Thanks! Undoubtedly those 3 new 532s will be mandatory year 2000 acquisitions! Dennis has offered to keep me in the "know" too which is great.

Is it permissible to give us any advance info on the handle materials for these BG-42 532s? Obviously one has to be desert ironwood

. Would one of the others be bone , abolone or maybe even fossilized mastadon ivory???
