Hey all. I'm new to knife collecting and very new to slipjoints. I just ordered my first Case, a Wharncliffe Tiny Trapper, a few days ago. I must admit that traditional slip knives have an elegance and personality that are sorely lacking in many modern folders.

Anyways, I've been perusing AG Russell's website and have discovered his 3.0 inch Ti Lockback knife. The price amazes me - what with VG10 and Titanium. Have any of you guys/gals used this knife? I'd like to read some reviews first. Thanks. :)

I have a 2.5 ti lockback. It's pretty nice. I carry it my wallet. There are a few review on it. But I haven't seem a review for the 3.0. Personally, it really depends on the what your interest is. The down side to the knife is the handle. It's hard to get a really good grip on the knife. I would suggest the peanut over it.

God Bless

I like the 3.0.
Though only 1/2" longer than the 2.5 model, the 3.0 is built more substantially - thicker scales, etc.

D...VG10 is a high end stainless steel and performs accordingly. Takes and holds a good edge if the heat treat is done properly.

Screw construction. Four small phillips screws hold it together. I have all three sizes of the AG Russell titanium pen knives. None of them are hard use knives, but I do carry the 3.0 nearly every day as a backup. They take up very little room in a pocket, have good blade steel, and are incredibly lightweight (and I really like titanium). Hard to go wrong for the price, unless you need a knife that will se heavy use, then I'd recommend something like a Spyderco Ladybug instead.

Do you EDC it? How does the VG10 perform?

I would EDC it, but I prefer slipjoints for EDC.

The VG-10 on this knife performs very well. It was very, very sharp out of the box and has stayed that way.

Thanks Blues. Is the knife screw construction or pinned?

Screw construction, as described by NeonLight.
The knife is very nicely made (in Japan); I don't hesitate to recommend it.

My experiance of the Ladybug is not for hard work either, so how much work can you do with the 3" Titanium?

They might stand up to comparable use (never abused either), but the Spyderco Ladybug will be much more comfortable in the hand IMO. I wouldn't subject either to the kind of use or abuse that calls for a larger sturdier knife.

Let's move this discussion over to General Knife Discussion since it's beginning to branch out into other knives which don't fit the parameters of the Traditional Forum.

Yes, and it is completely awesome for the price. Got one riding in the sheath, beside my crackberry, right now.

You'll love it. Wicked scalpel.

I've been meaning to get one of the 3" folders, it looks quite nice. Do you have any pics of it, J_Curd? It's always easier to see what a knife looks like in non-stock photos

Unfortunately I do not (out of pic ability for a week or so, moving), but I can tell you that it is everything the AG photos show you and more. The Ti slabs are a brushed satin finish, and the blade, action, and lock are all good. It's a three finger knife for me, and super thin, which is why I like it...disappears in the pocket better than a SAK Classic.

It's an awesome knife. I bought one (the 3.0 lockback Ti) for my Dad's birthday. It's got such a thin profile. The blade comes razor sharp. You can easily whittle hair with the blade out of the box.

?!?

Out of the box hair whittling? Now I have to get one.

Wow, thanks Blues for moving this thread. I've gotten much more responses than I thought I would!

Thanks for the input, J_Curd and Harkamus. A big thanks to JNieporte. I've been looking for a review of this knife and your pictures and words really answered a lot of my questions. Great job.

Real quick - Have you ever used it to cut fruit or anything? Have you ever disassembled it for cleaning? If so, how difficult is it to put back together?

I'm nearly sold on this knife but I'm curious as to the answers for the above questions. Thanks.

I wouldn't take it apart. Soap, water, then towel and air dry...it will be fine. I hit mine with some canned air on the occasion, but the sheath keeps it very clean.
