I'm guessing that Cowry Y is the likelier candidate for blade steel. The 3% carbon and 20% chrome of Cowry X sounds brittle to me. Gee, if it isn't brittle it sure would be hard to sharpen.

Me too. But note that 440V is not that far off, I think it's about 2.75 C and 17 Cr. Don't remember if Cowry is a particle steel, and too lazy to read the thread above to figure it out. But, since 440V isn't known as the toughest steel around, and Cowry X is even higher on C and Cr, it does seem like it could be brittle.
