AG110 vs BP110

the question is better for what?
if you are going any ware near salt water OR
you dont want to have to clean it and oil after every meat use
go for S30V !!!

IF
you are a it is only for hunting and cutting game ect ...
and you dont want to stop to sharpen at all
and you are anal on keeping it cleaned and oiled
go for the cpm154

reasoning :
s30v was designed and composed for hard use and max crosourn resastance
it is hard to sharpen but holds welll and dont chip

cpm154 is not as resistance as the onter ...
it is a tad harder to sharpen
using a steel only to frishen up last a long time on meat...

define your use then you have your answer...
.02 worth - i like alround of S30V... well that is -
unless you happen to have a old 440 around with out the hollow grind!!!!
that is hands down the best all round walking around useing it on a construction site knife...
still to this day... !
only drawback-
you have to know how to sharpen a knife correctly for your use!

No problem with sharpening a knife Dave ;) that is one of my specialties!

I tend to use my knives for whatever I need them for at that point in time. For example; working on carpentry projects, I'm cutting wood... remodeling projects, cutting carpet and such... electrical work, etc. When I get to the woods, I'm cleaning fish and such... I'm thinking for my first (of 2) maybe the s30v is the way to go.

Mav is an avid cyclist. With the tour-De-France in full swing....he maybe racing...or just enjoying the show. That guy rides hundreds of miles on his bike. The thought of riding a bike to the store makes me sweat and the store is only two blocks away!!!

LOL -- I used to bike a lot, now I don't have time ;( Good to know, just wondered what happened to Mav.

This may be a good point, however both blades are coated with basically the same coating to make them both further corrosion resistant!
(Titanium Aluminum Nitride coating)

Either way they both hold a mean edge ;)
Let us know what you do maine woodsman!
Maybe a review will be in order? :D

I most certainly will! Good to know on the coating BTW.

I'm studying on getting both. Both steels are powdered steels and made right here in the USA. It's my understanding that Bos HTs the S30V and oversees the HT on the CPM 154. Really, I think both are just grand. i was talking to Josh Graham awhile back and he gave every so small of a nod to the S30V, but said that he had talked to some of his customers that think CPM 154 cuts more aggressively. For some reason, If I had to chose between the two I think I'd go with CPM 154...because I like 154 CM.

Best of luck.
:)

If you buy one, post your review back here? I'm thinking I'm going to need one of each... why did I KNOW that was going to happen! (now to convince my better half) LOL

On the AG's... does the paint thinner take off the gold or the gold and black coating? It was my understanding that the Ti-Al-N coating was the black, but the BP picture of their 110 shows a grey blade. I love my AG110 so far... I've really been impressed with S30V (AG 110, AG Vanguard, and Spyderco Native) thus far... I haven't had to sharpen one yet, however.

I have 2 AG 110 stags. One has a dark shiney black blade and the other has more of a grey blade. I'm not sure but I think its just one got a heavier coat. The front view of the knives you cant tell the differance too much because the way the light is hitting it in the photo. But the picture of the back of the knives show the real life color of both.

They can make several colors using this process! My 110 AG's both vary in shades also. The Bass pro may also not be the same exact coating, but they are very similar. (its not really a coating)
The paint thinner only removed the Yellow and white logo. The Ti-Al-N "fusion" isnt coming off ;) That baby is molecularly bonded?

I've got a birthday coming up... been reading a lot of positive things about these 2 knives. I'm thinking about purchasing either the 110AG S30V, or the 110BP 154CPM. Which do you think I should get and why? And, I can only purchase one at this time ;)

It'll be a user as all of my 110's see use...

I have one each of these, both new in the sheath, both factory fresh and un-used to date, both currently living in the backpack impatiently waiting to make the journey to the deer camp in the fall.

Dad told me his freezer was nearly empty and all the sausage is nearly eaten up out of the kids freezer. Me, I am still hoarding a little backstrap.

So,,,,, looks like there is gonna be a lotta cuttin and slicin going on come November. For those of you that have read my other AG110 posts, yeah....I do have a nib one in reserve to test up against the nib BassPro. The first AG I used in previous hunts was awesome. Will be fun to compare two factory fresh premium steel blades...

Dang,,,it is entirely too soon to be getting buck fever... The animal kind that is....:D

I took the gold off of one of my AG 110's. I was sad that I did after it was gone. I didn't mess with trying to do a great job on it so you can still see a faint imprint of the logo.

You may want to invest in some diamond hones when you go to sharpen that S30V. Was the only way I got mine back sharp. But I do not profess to be any good at sharpening.

Very nice knives!!

wh4f that dark coating on the AG can come off . Not a big deal but it can wear off from friction. Mainewoodsman thanks, I like the knives too. Those stag AG are some of the prettiest knives I've seen. If they dont sell out I may try to get a few more to put up in a safe for my kids when they are older.

I was traveling home from the inlaws today and passed the BassPro Shop outside Charlotte, NC....I pulled in with the toughts of getting the CPM 154 Buck 110. The BassPro staff member working the knife counter was such a jerk (arrogant and unhelpful) that I left the knife with him. It was clear that he didn't want to be bothered. Maybe he didn't think I could afford it...after all I hadn't shaved. Little did he know that a Chris Reeves Sebenza was riding in my pocket...I could have afforded the 110. Oh well...he lost a sell because of his attitude.

I may order one online soon. I'll keep my custom BG-42 handy for now. If (or when) I get the CPM 154 I'll get back with my toughts.

:)

Well today I received my 192 Cabelas AG Vanguard!
AWESOME!!!!!!! Is it deer season yet???
After opening it I decided to read the papers that came with it. After reading this I decided that I would definately go for the Cabelas AG over the Bass Pro 154CPM.
Read for yourself and then decide!! It comes with the Pro Line lifetime sharpening warranty!!!!!!
Enjoy :D

Jim,

The 192 is the rubber handeled plain blade Vanguard, at least mine is. . Whats the year stamp on yours?
Mine is the Idaho. Just wondering if Cabellas has a supply of those or are ordering new ones as their inventory goes down.

Hi Jimbo,

You can't make a boast like that and not give us a pic of that AG192. It may just get another one sold....LOL. I've got a Cherry wood BB 192 in-bound ;)

I believe the 692 is the rubber version, but I have seen where the same blades (stamp) have been used for both models. mine has the sideways T.
I believe they are ordering as needed, my 110's have 2 different stamps also!
(unless they ordered them at the end of/ beginning of that year)???
