Nice find!
As has been noted, that's a fairly early Santa Fe Stoneworks Earthling Police. Based on the steel, it was probably done between '92 and '95. I say probably only because SFSW still does that design and would probably do it on a G-2 Police if somebody sent it to them. However, I'd bet yours was done during the era I mentioned.
I agree with the observation that the Earthling is possibly the most attractive design Santa Fe has done. Some of their other marquetry designs, like the dragonfly motif Dragonflies are also works of art. The Police is a bit big for my pocket, but I liked the design so much that I talked Bill Wirtel of Santa Fe into having his marquetry guys do an Earthling Kiwi for me.
This photo also shows that the layout of the planets and stars is not always the same from batch to batch.
From what I understand, the overlay is created as a rather thick block, then sliced into slabs.
