Ok im sure this has been asked a million times, but here it goes.
If i buy a crkt m16, or a spyderco native at wally is it the exact same knife as one from a dealer online or a academy or sporting goods store??

Only if it can be in two places at the same time. Seriously though they are the same knives, same quality, and made from the same materials.

Yes, they are the same knives, though it is amusing to imagine knife manufacturers with two different production lines, one for Wal-Mart and the other for everyone else.

It depends, usually they will be the same knife. A company may cheapen up the packaging or the sheath or some small thing.

Some Jack@ss at a knife show told me "no dont buy it at wally the steel is cheaper quality". I was 99 percent sure he was a fat silly old man.

haha.

But Walmart does do that quite often with other products.
They are not always cheaper either.
I try to support the smaller seller. He needs it more than Walmart.
I know I can get information, inside tips or just some good BS from
a local guy instead of the 18 yr old counting the minutes until his shift ends.
I doubt Walmart would notice if 100 or even 1000 peeps bought their CRKT, Spyderco or
Kershaw somewhere else.

We only have one "little guy" in town and its a russell hardware imagine that!!!

If i would have believed him then i wouldn't have asked. Anyways i'm no expert when it comes to wally and there knives, for all i know they could have been made especially for wally, with cheaper materials. Then if you think about some of the jack@ss's that tell you there not first quality, most of the time you laugh about it later

The part of Texas I come from is about the same way. I live 10 miles from a town with a population of about 36,000. Wal-Mart and a local gun shop are the only places to buy decent knives. Home depot, the local hardware store, and Tractor Supply have very limited selections and they are usually junk ( cheap Smith and Wesson's are their top of the line knives). I order all my knives online. The only decent knives I have purchased around here were Leathermans, Sogs, and a few wally world Spyderco's.

where do u live ashtx??? I live in del rio, i bought a nice sog twitch, kershaw, and a benchmade at russells. Theres a nice shop in ingram mall in san antonio. I find it hard to buy retail, though. Cant beat those prices online

Yeah, wally world knives are the same as the other knives, but if I had to guess, it will only be a matter of time before they force the knife makers to make knives for wally world overseas. Walmart used to sell Snapper lawnmowers made in USA, but they tried to force them to cut costs and make overseas and they told Walmart NO! Now they are kind of famous in the business world for being the company who told walmart NO! So, buy now while the buyings cheap and the product is still great.

Wally World tells company X we'll pay Y for Z units of your product. It's up to the company to make the necessary production savings to meet Wally World's prices. A "Wally World Production Line" is not to far from the truth. Usually that "run" suffers from QC issues if from anything. The product is identical, but QC checks along the line aren't performed to save on labor.

In some cases, well-respected companies such as PSE develop a product for Wally World. In PSE's case it was a blister pack compound bow - a travesty IMHO, YMMV.

May be yes, may be no. W world approached my members of my family who are in manufacturing. They were told that they had to open a branch of their manufacturing facility in china to fill Wally-orders, or they would be drooped. They also wanted them to close the factory in n. Ala. Well they,(my family) had workers there, some of which had been with the company far longer than retirement required. Good relation ships between employer, and employees. Family says no. Walmart tells family that they will approach other retailers that we do business with said manufacturer, and convince them to not do business with my family any longer if we didn't do what they wanted. Threats, strong arm mentality. almost Mafia like. The family didn't go along with them. Lost a lot of business. But the employees are more important than making a little more money. HP computer company, when called by Myself, told me flat out that the model that I was looking at at W-Mart, was not the same as the same Model at Staples, or Best -Buy. I was told to look for an additional # in the serial #. This denotes made for W-Mart. The advertise it as the same Model. Priced less of course. But it isn't One is made in Taiwan I believe they said. the other here and Japan, with U.S. and Japanese parts. Not the same at all. In archery, (I use to own X-IT Archery here in Killeen Tx.) They would advertise a bow as the same as-----. But wasn't. For instance, they were selling a bow made in the ancient style of the white tail hunter, but marked as a modern design compound. The limbs were even lettered with the modern bow's logos. The customer would buy a bow at wally-world for 125. when my product cost me 275. whole sale. The proud customer would bring it to my store for us to tune them for broad heads before hunting, and what do you know. The Bows they brought in were (from us), retail 85. dollar bow's. The customer had been fooled by the old bait and switch. But what is so sinister about this, it is the manufacturer being forced to do this just to survive wally's threats. I've even seen companies forced to counter fit their own product just to be able to keep selling there. Tv'.s Electronic. Hair care products. Products labeled made in USA, when the only part of the product made in the USA was the label. You don't have to Blindly believe me on this one! Congress nailed the hell out of them several years ago. Cost them millions! But the hearings weren't made public until a month after the Christmas buying season. Go Figure! They pulled the same on Schrade! Ever wonder what happened to them? You got it. The oldest maker in the US. Put under by Wally world for refusing just this kind of crooked dealing. so yea, just the same! How in the heck do you know? How do we know the can has changed its spots for this one product? Want one more example. Winchester-White box 9mm and .45. ever wonder why it smokes a little. I got a lung infection from it at an indoor range. Product of Mexico. Now go the a quality gun store and look at where it is manufactured. We sell for less, and give you less quality for your money. Should be the motto! They have become the most powerful company in America. And they aren't doing it on the up-and up. There is an old saying. "Let the buyer beware! I can think of no better example than W-M. It has been featured on the National news channels, in threads all over the net, and a very well done documentary on PBS. I am dismayed that so few pay attention to what is being done around them, and to them. Mike

This topic has come up many times and Sal Glesser has said on these forums that the Native they sell at Walmart is the exact same knife they sell everywhere else.

Think about it for a minute - Mr. Glesser has built a top notch reputation in the knife business by selling a high quality product and standing behind that product with an excellent warranty and great customer service. Spyderco quality is known the world over - Does anyone really think he would risk the hard earned reputation of Spyderco Knives by selling a subpar Native at Walmart??... I think not.

Maybe somebody could refresh my memory a little bit. I seem to recall back 4 or 5 years ago there was a really sub-par run of Natives made for Spyderco by some other company, that ended up in Wal-Marts or something. Could this be why people are asking about Wally World versions of knives?

Edit: I did a little searching, it was the Camillus-made BRK Natives.
