Here's a project while you're waiting Brendan. Work on putting yourself together a sword maintenance kit if you don't already have one. Here's what goes into mine.
- Wooden box, to house contents
- Bottle of choji oil (make your own inexpensively by mixing pure mineral oil with pure clove oil, easy on the clove oil it's "aromatic")
- Wiping cloths, gun cleaning patches pack well and are the right size to use once and discard
- Chakmak, ground from an old metal cutting file, as fancy as you want to make it
- Blade polish, the Samurai used powdered limestone and rice paper, I use gun cleaning patches and Flitz metal polish
- Honing stone, mine's a natural Arkansas stone
- Strop, nothing fancy, suede leather glued to a strip of wood with a little metal polish rubbed into the leather
Have your fiance' join in by letting her decorate the box with some decoupage or whatever, if your wife to be takes an interest in your hobby you're miles ahead.
You'll wind up with a good kit for keeping your sword, and khukuris, in top shape. Everything together, handy and transportable, you'll like it I'm sure.
