The postman made my day when I saw the package from Arkansas had been left in my mailbox. Only took 4 days. :)

The first thing I can say at this point is this is a hell of a lot of knife for the money. If you didn't know what they cost and just picked one up to handle in a shop I think you'd easily guess it was twice as expensive.

The second thing to mention out is how solid it is. It's got real heft. You'd figure that to be case when you read it's got a 3/16" thick blade and all steel boslters and liners, but feeling it in your hand gives you the true sensation. When closed the weight is concentrated in a relatively long, slim area. Sort of like holding a roll of quarters, though not that heavy. With the blade open the balance point seems right at the pin above the shield, perhaps a nudge towards the top of the shield.

The construction is is great. All the seams are smooth and pieces are nicely fit. For an everyday work knife this would figure to stand up very well. One hand opening is very easy. The nail mark is well placed for this purpose. Action is smooth and the lockbar snaps in with a solid click. Closing detent is good. It doesn't close with a snap so much as give a muted thunk. I imagine that has something to do with the striker pin setup. The sound throws me off a bit, I expected it to be louder on closing, but the function is dead on.

I took several pictures but haven't uploaded all of them yet. I figured I'd start with some views of the knife that I hadn't seen posted anywhere yet - in hand, side by side with other knives, looking down the handle, inside the handle, and one gives a peek at the coil spring under the lockbar (forgive the flash on that shot, it was the only to adequately light up the inside that angle). I'll get the rest up later, hopefully tonight or tomorrow.

Well done A.G. You guys have really scored with this one.

For reference the other knives shown are an Uncle Henry 885 and an S&M Swayback Clasp.

Yep, it is a knife that will easily outlast it's owner. I have the 2008 Texas Ranger version.
AGR has 4 different patterns from the same maker. I still need to get the GIANT Sunfish. These knives are all about big, strong, smooth, and sharp.
The "big" is more than length, it's mass.
If you pocket carry one, you'll likely get more women asking you out on a date.

Unreal ! he must be carrying all 4 of these big guys. hope he doesn't trip on his pants.

I don't know how he's gonna get the knives out of his pockets anyway - he doesn't even have arms or hands! ;)

You guys crack me up.:)

The funny thing is that the title of the thread (apropos of the image) states that the knife has landed. Looks like that's just exactly what happened to those pants.

That said, it is a fine looking knife.

That's a nice knife. And good looking, too.

By the way, what is rucarta? Googled it, but could not find how it is made.

I asked that in the first thread but don't think it received an answer. When I was googling around, I read micarta is a trademarked name, so I figure it's micarta under another name.

If it helps, it is smoother than I thought it'd be from looking at pictures, but it isn't slick.

jujigatame, my AGR Sowbelly Trapper makes a thunk sound, too. It surprised me also.

Those are great pictures. I thought it was bigger than that, but the first picture--with it in your hand--makes it look just about perfect. Thanks for that.

Those pants must have some magical powers because they appear to be defying the laws of gravity just enough to stop from falling down completely. That guy is probably 5'8" and shops for t-shirts made to fit NBA forwards. I also wonder how awkward it is to reach for your wallet at knee level...but back to subject at hand.

When I went out this afternoon I had the knife in my front pocket. It sat nicely and didn't feel too heavy or bulky at all. My pants were fairly loose fitting twill cargos so we'll have to see what the difference is when I try it with some jeans that have less extra room and drape to the fabric.

I tried opening the knife one-handed with gloves on, both my regular winter gloves (thin-ish soft shell material with rubbery grip pattern on the fingers) and some Mechanix work gloves, and had good results. The purchase on the thumb cutout was still solid. The grip on the backside of the knife with the other four fingers was where there could be a bit more slippage owing to the smooth scales and rounded edges

Like Roland said above the size of this knife is really displayed in its mass. It's the same closed length as the S&M clasp and just 1/4" longer than the 885 stockman but neither of them feels like they're on the same block with the gunstock as a "big" knife.

Remember these ladies from the Wendy's commercials?

Well, when it comes to this knife they've got no cause to complain because you can see all the beef right there in the blade. It just dwarfs the others. Heck, it dwarfs any other folder I've got at this time.

Going to work on some shots of the blade later and see if I can portray how well that's done.

Thanks for the compliments.

From the Glossary on the A. G. Russell website:

Rucarta™
Man made material. that offers attractive appearance, great strength and durability. Phenolic resin and layers of cloth.A trademark of A. G. Russell™ Knives.

I read somewhere else on his website that it was the same as Micarta, but since Micarta is a registered trademark, he called his Rucarta (sort of a blend of "Russell" and "Micarta" I guess.)
