Ah, a bar band is setting up...

I just saw the drum set that was set up for tonights gig. It looks like it was thrown off a bridge into a salt bath then left in the sun to dry.

Oh yeah...it's gonna be an interesting yard party!

Sometimes I wish I was a guitar player. You can carry your instrument everywhere.

Your welcome ! Imma Bass player, and play a very small amount of guitar.
I started as a sound and lights guy. Sooo I can be critical of evry one involved in the show.
A brother in arms. Very cool. I’ve found a surprising amount of respect for bass on this forum… which is refreshing. I feel like we spend our careers over coming the “bass players aren’t real musicians” stigma.

I make a point to offer to help our drummer load in and out. He drives an hour for most of our gigs, too. Sometimes I bet you wish you just had a Cajon.

I love my Cajons lol.

Part of the culture here in Hawaii is backyard Kanikapila (impromptu jam), so I carry a Cajon with me often.

Sometimes I teach younger kids how to play it, and if they show basic skill (if you know you know) I'll gift it to them.

And that's awesome you help the drummer. I try to help everyone get set up for sound check, then stay afterwards to help carry equipment.

It goes a long way in sealing bonds between musicians and also ensuring sound guys remember you, and try to dial you in with more effort.

How cool is this?! Yes! What a cool thing to do man. You can change a kids life doing something like that.
Lol yeah it sounds nice but if I'm being honest with myself it hurts a bit, since I usually have that Cajon tuned with some mileage on it.

But I am a firm believer in positive vibes and connections. It would be cool to be remembered as a nice guy after this life passes.

Us musicians are a sensitive bunch. We bare a part of our soul when we play to the pubic, with the hope they respond in a way that gives a re-enforcing energy back. It's intimate.

When you can gel with another player it's pretty magic. When a couple of you can gel together, and then with an audience it's pure joy.

Wife's brother is a drummer in a local cover band, and he literally learned by playing Rock Band (he did take actual lessons later on). We've seen them a few times and they're not too bad.

That’s why I play. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s worth all the miles. The riffs just happen, I stop thinking and magic happens. It’s one of the reasons recording never thrilled me.

I usually don't mind when a bar band starts setting up but I draw the line at Karaoke! If I'm having a meal or drink in a bar and they start setting up for Karaoke I get up and go. By the way, I think "Karaoke" is Japanese for "tone deaf"!

Karaoke is something I always had a hard time listening to and avoided. The combination of really talented singers and ... uh... less talented singers never makes for a good contrast.
The people who go really "pitchy" drive me nuts with cringe- and that's not me trying to be a snob; it just curdles my blood.

That being said, I met my (now) wife at one of the few Karaoke nights I've ever been to.
I might recommend it for finding that 'forever' mate.

My band played last night in Granby, and i have to say- it seems like the further away you get from major cities, the more enthusiasm there is for live music.
Last night we had an 84 year old up and dancing with her friends and family.
We played in Hartford a couple weeks ago and audiences are just not as interactive.

I'm getting the band setup with earbud monitors so we can play quieter, and see if maybe the Hartford crowd appreciates background music next Friday.

Have a good gig!
Thanks bud! It was last night, and though people liked it, it got a little sloppy. But hey, that’s how it goes sometimes. We’re playing again in a week from today and I’m just hoping the guys put the woodshed time in.

It’s a small world man. My wife is from just down the road in East Granby. What was your alma mater?

If you ever find yourself in Granby, it’s a cool super small joint with a nice outdoor patio. Four Dad’s Pub, right there in the town center.

WPI

Very cool- My pop graduated in the class of 61, I believe. My boss’s boss razzes me all the time that I’m one of the few engineers he hired that didn’t come from WPI. He also went to WPI. Very good school.

Here is a short clip of an example of a lot of gigs I play. Backyard bashes make up a ton of the gigs.

Go easy on me. I am not that skilled, and my hair looks dumb. My Dad had to go through cancer treatment, and started to grow my hair as a joke that I would donate it to him. His cancer has regressed, but I haven't cut it yet. Don't want to jinx anything lol.

Sounds great from where I sit, buddy. Rock solid drumming- the kind where you can lock in and just live in the pocket. That’s gravy to me, man.

I’d play with you any day.

If I get someone to make a recording of us one of these up coming gigs, I’ll post it.
