I just thought I would translate what knifenut was trying to say for those who just mentally skip his posts. I would hate for anyone to miss such words of wisdom.

No I really don't read all your posts. If I did I am sure my little rant would have been much much worse. If you will up your reading comprehension I never said you were a know it all, I said you came across as a know it all. I am not here to stroke your ego, you do enough of that all on your own. If you will read a few of your own posts you will see how pompous you come across, sorry I don't worship at the altar of knifenut, but it really looks like I am not the only one. I will give you a piece of advice though, if one person thinks your a pompous jerk that's a personality conflict (it happens), if three or four people believe you are a pompous jerk, it may be time to look in the mirror and figure out why they feel that way. On blade forums there are places to look to see what people think of you. You are a smart guy (you tell us all the time, we get it) you can figure it out if you put your head to it.

Yes, because I care what someone on the internet thinks of me

I think I just might cry now that you have talked bad about me in W&C oooo the pain.......

That tip could also be re profiled on the grit stone of the paper wheels. It will only take a second. Knifenut is right, profiling with paper wheels will bring that tip back in line right proper.

On the other hand, you could also reform the spine to remake a tip with the paper wheels, it is quite the versatile tool! It is the easy way.

You know, people are pointing out your immaturity, and what do you do? Prove them right.

Hole, digging, stop.

That's right you just came back to this thread to tell me how little you care. to paraphrase Shakespeare " Methinks the lad protests to much"

Again up your reading comprehension I posted nothing about you in Whine and Cheese I called a spade a spade right here in an open public forum, by the way I got your Private Message thanks I really needed that.

You got the PM too? Did he get the pic link correct the first time?

I asked him if he would fill out the form and post it on line. Don't guess that's going to happen.

Yeah he got it right. I just told him if he was a good boy maybe his Mom would make him some Mac and Cheese. I guess I am going to let this go SPX this is starting to feel like kicking a puppy, easy to do but not really very challenging.

Kicking puppies......

The horror..................the horror......

So, um, yeah, .........

OP, I have repaired knives both ways, it really depends on how much of the tip is broken and how much time/energy you want to put into it.

I have used both methods, too. The decision of which method to use depends on the situation at hand. If a knife is always losing the tip due to carelessness or to an overly pointy tip, then rounding the spine will reduce the rate of this problem recurring. This is why the Delica 4 has the spine rounded near the tip as compared with the Delica 3. Too many users were wrecking the tips on the D3's.

On a coated blade, fixing the tip from the edge side typically is more attractive. Point is, it all depends on the situation at hand.

Your changing the profile of the spine and tip when there is no reason to. Your also putting grind marks where they don't need to be. Simply sharpening the edge correctly will restore most tip damage.

This is the method that Murray Carter recommends, taking the spine and bringing it down to create the tip. Also, can't grind marks just be taken out just like all other marks on steel, by polishing? Isn't that what you're doing with an edge, anyway?

...just saying.

Bill1170 has said it well enough, nothing to add.

somber, yes I understand that, read above.

HT, funny to see a few of you think I'm a kid.... Didn't know 29 was still considered a kid. GOML ;)

Age doesn't define maturity, but I'm glad you agree that this is a perfectly acceptable way to restore a tip.

In Carter's "Advanaced Sharpening" DVD, he recommends and demonstrates making the repair from the edge side of the blade, not the spine side.

In the first one he demonstrates differently. I would say that since this is a more difficult technique to maintain a consistent angle this would be a more advanced sharpening method. He still recommends the spine, and when he reprofiled my necker this is the technique he used in addition to making the repair along the edge.

Guess that's why it's on the Advanced DVD. :)

Just sayin, he doesn't only repair spine side... it goes back to using what's appropriate to get the desired result.

Yep, when needed.

You're posturing, but I'm still glad you agree that there are more ways to do things. When needed - if the end result is striving to restore the tip of the blade, then I guess this would be a needed technique, as well as just restoring it along the edge (which is a more difficult/advanced technique - does OP have the necessary skills for more advanced techniques).
