Air Compresser

BIG!!

Seriously, It really depends on what tools you want to use. Tools that require a constant air supply (i.e. sandblaster) will require a bigger unit with more SCFM. The Sears website suggests a compressor with a PSI and SCFM rating 1-1.5x your highest rated tool.

As big as you can afford

YES!!!! you NEED a 60gal tank and 10CFM@90psi. The price difference between compressors besides tank size is pressure limit, and how much air it moves. Here is what I have been eyeing.

As big as you can fit/afford. I have a 5HP 60gal Campbell Hausfield and it's too small. If I had the compresor for it I would likely have bid on the power hammer at Blacksmith Days. If you're in no hurry, kep an eye out on craigslist/ebay/Merchandiser/etc and find a used one. You can get a LOT more compressor if you can find a good used one.

I have a 15cfm and it works well with most tools ,I added a extra tank for when I use my 1/4" 90 degree high speed grinder, my jigsaw and my 1/2" chuck drill.

if you want the best-look for a quincy-you might find a used one if your lucky-a old emglo would be my second choice -
a good place to look is at old garages that just sell gas now-the old ones can be rebuilt better than most new-with the exception of quincy

A point that I cannot stress enough, which has been mentioned previously, make sure it is an oil lubed engine... or you will not want to be in the room while it is running.

OK. Let me try and explain the difference between a single stage pump and a two stage pump. Fist off, let me say ,I have woked in body shops for over 20 years and you can not repair cars with out a good air compressor systems. A single stage pump is basiclly a home owner pump. Ment to be used for short bursst of air. Lets say an air ratchet taking a nut or bolt off and a short pause before the next one is taken loose. Most single stage pumps have two cylinders of the same size and each cylinder draws air direcly into the cylinder and pumps it directly into the tank. Most single stage pumps have a max pressure raiting of around 120lbs. Most two stage pumps have two cylinders but they are two different sizes. The larger cylinder draws air in and then pumps it into the smaller cylinder which in turn pumps the air into the tank. This type pump pushes far more air at much higher pressure. Most two stage pumps are set to build 175 lbs of pressure. There are some two stage compressors that come with 60gal tanks but most I've seen are mounted on 80gal. tanks. If you need to run a tool for more than 2 or 3 minutes at a time you are going to have to stop every few minutes to let the air catch up on a single stage pump and it takes longer to build the air up than it does to use it. The compressor "Nowicki" posted about sounds like a good deal. In my shop here at home, and I do do a lot of body work here, I bought a two stage compressor from Lowe's a few years ago, on sale for $749.00. It maintains enough air for two of us to run DA sanders at the same time and not run out of air. So, if you really need air you are wasting your time and money with a single stage pump.
