There is a used air compressor for sale pretty cheap locally. It's a Dayton Speedaire 7.5hp, 2 stg, 220V, cast iron, oiled, 80ga tank. Problem is I don't know the guy and the thing isn't hooked up. Is there any way to tell whether it will run when I get power to it? He says the pump isn't frozen, and it should power right up. Anything I can look at besides overall condition??

thanks

Yeah, I'm thinking it either doesn't work or it might be 3-phase - he said he never wired it up. He only wants $400 for it, and I'm guessing that it's over $2k new. I'm gonna go take a look, just because it's gonna bother me not to, but it's a little too good to be true.

Suspicions confirmed - it's 3-phase. From what I've read, it's expensive to get 3-phase power to your garage, IF the power company will even do it. Explains why he never hooked it up...

offer him $275 and get a rotary phase converter or a VFD that will drive that motor. Or get a single phase motor from ebay. get the same frame and rpm as the motor on the compressor. I got a 7.5 horse ingersol rand dirt cheap and Im running it on a VFD, works great.

I read that there are disavantages to phase converters, but have forgotten what they were. One was reduced horsepower. I could find a new motor but didn't want the hassle. Also this guy just seems shady. That compressor is worth 3-4 times what he's asking. I gave up and went to the store. My new compressor is in the garage and my next project will be getting power to it. Thanks for the responses.

Static phase converters = reduced horse power
Rotary phase converters dont have that problem. Good luck with the new compressor. What did you get?
