I am trying to find an article written by Jerry Busse on how to build an air filtration system using an old furnace fan and motor. I came across it a while ago on the net, but I can't seem to locate it now. Does anyone here have a copy??

I don't have a copy. However I built one in my shop using the old blower and motor from an old oil furnace. I mounted the motor and the blower assembly on a plywood board using a pulley and belt to drive the blower with the motor and simply built a box around it.

Air gets drawn in through two sets of fine pore furnace filters and then gets blown back out the blower and into the shop. The whole unit is only 2 feet square. I wired it into the wall permanently with a wall switch to turn it on and off as needed.

It moves alot of air and pulls alot of dirt out. The whole thing costed about 20 dollars for the filters and the fan belt. The rest was from the dump for free.

1+ what Bufford said. I did a similar thing. My box has an inside dimension to fit a 16 X 20 X 1" air filter. Have to clean filter after about every 40 hrs use. This thing really keeps the air clean and cost ~$10 in parts. I have a 4" pipe connecting to a collector directly under my grinder wheel. Best thing to add to my shop!

Forgot to mention that the blower fan is an old furnace fan that I got for free. Just called the first Heating/Air shop I found in the phone book and asked what they do with old furnace blower fans when folks get new furnaces. They said they just haul them to the dump. I asked if they had any that are waiting for the trip to the dump and they said yes. Went down and took out the fan in 10 minutes and there was my free blower. :D

Yep, they work well.
I built one like that, but uglier, and with some feet on it to raise it off the floor over a foot.
I didn't want to hang it from the ceiling and bang my head on it...
Now I can use it as a small table, too.
I went with washable electrostatic filters and HEPA filters.
