Air Force Survival Knife and SOG Seal Pup as Khukuri Companions

I still like the looks of the SOG Seal Pup for a light belt knife but also because I thought that it would be perfect for canoeing. However, a couple of formites on the survival forum indicated that it was all but impossible to sharpen SOG's and if they can't do it I probably can't. AG Russell advertises the Becker's. I think that I drive up to their store and see how they handle before making a decision. Oh well Decisions, decisions.

I've never had a problem sharpening my SOGs. Got 14 of them and they are all really sharp. Some I sharpen with my belt sander and some I do free hand with stones. The SEAL Pup would definalty make a good river rafting or dive knife. It's thin enough to be a good slicer, yet stong enough to handle most utility chores.

I own a SOG Navy Seal pup knife. Not bad, but the blade needs a little regrinding to get to my liking.

That said, I read a good review in which the Becker BK-7 beat the crap out of the Navy Seal knife. Becker is mady by Camillus and has a reputation of being inexpensive and really sturdy. I would think that you should look into the BK7. Maybe ask this question on the Camillus forum. They're pretty good guys.

Hope you have luck in you search!

BTW, I've never had problems sharpening my Seal Pup with a diamond and steel, for lack of a belt sander. Keeps it pretty sharp.

Nam, what don't you like about the blade on the Seal Pup? to thick? To thin? Thanks,

Since you like the BK-7, you should try it with a convex edge and convex sharpened Clip point. They are very nice! Adding a choil helps too. :D

I have been looking at the Becker's too but I have quite a few of what I would consider bigger blades. Right now I'm looking for a smaller hiking, camping, canoeing belt knife. Probably if I thought that I needed to carry the BK-7 I would probably stick with my Khuk. If and when I ever get any extra money, I plan on buying a Becker but I've been looking more at the Brute.

You might want to do a search on "Brute" here at BF and elsewhere. Some have been quite disappointed with that model as a chopper, and that's all it could be good for without really extensive "surgery" on the blade geometry. I own one, but its a rarity ("safe queen") that I have not used.

Seemed to me that the secondary grind was a bit fat, producing a less acute cutting edge. Don't get me wrong, though. I suppose they did it for strength, and I can't blame them there. But it's nothing that a little while with a course diamond sharpener can't fix! :)
