Airport confiscated knives

I don't see a reason why someone would carry a knife onto a plane if they damn well know you're not supposed to. Just put the knife in your checked luggage and you won't need to worry about it.

I couldn't in good conscience buy from these thieves. That's what they are. Confiscation is just the government's word for legal theft IMO.
I agree with this entirely.

It's bullsh*t. This is one of the many reasons I avoid the airlines and airports to the extent possible. (Which, other than pick-ups and drop-offs, has been 100% in recent years.)

Just put the knife in your checked luggage and ...
Let the baggage handlers steal it instead of the TSA. Can't say as I'm seeing the difference, other than you know the TSA will steal it, whereas, with the baggage handlers, it's crap-shoot.

Because obviously bag handlers go through everyone's bag looking for things to steal. Are there any statistics on how often things get stolen out of bags by bag handlers?

I don't know if your closest airport has a drop box program.

"To cut down on the number of items forfeited to CATSA, and allow people to keep the prohibited items, the Airport Authority has installed Drop Boxes at all passenger pre-board screening points in the main terminals. Passengers will now have three options with prohibited items"

1) Store it at the airport until you return
2) Mail or courier it to yourself
3) Dispose of it

It just makes sense.I just recently found out my local airport has this program in place

"The Drop Boxes are clearly designated and the necessary forms can be completed in moments, allowing passengers to proceed through pre-board security screening as quickly as possible"

http://www.yvr.ca/authority/airmail/archive_details.asp?id=65

Prohibited items can include items ranging from small pocket knives and lighters to tools and hockey sticks.

It's more than just knives, scissiors or screwdriver getting confiscated at my local airport.Image losing a prized golf club, baseball bat, tennis racket, etc

Drop boxes, that is a new one. Good idea, if they want to enforce this style of security, it should be up to the authorities to be responsible for providing a service to recover restricted items. Its about time the government does some of the leg work. We pay security fees for on our flight tickets which should cover both sides- airline safety and passenger's interests. This should be set up at all airports.

Confiscating a knife under the law is not stealing.

An employee then picking through them and taking the good ones is.

I don't like it either, but I would rather see the knives sold and back into the hands of knife users, instead of destroyed.

Yeah, I'd rather they put the knives back in the hands of somebody who may actually care for it, than some idiot who tried to go through security with his knife. Lets face it, since 9-11 its been VERY widly known that you're not gonna get a knife through TSA under normal conditions. If you get your knife taken away from you these days, you were too stupid to deserve to keep it. Check it or lose it. I've flown many times since 9-11 with no problems. My pocket knife was in my bag at the other end.

Theres a lady who shows up at local gun shows with a big box of TSA conficated knifes. Mostly small saks. Sells the classics for 3 dollars apiece or 2.50 for 5 or more. The bigger saks sell for 5 to 6 dollars. Most of them are so little used that once you clean them up with soap and water and a old toothbrush, they look new. I buy lots of the classics and give them away to non-knife people to get them used to how handy a small sharp knife is. Made alot of converts.

I love TSA confiscations.

If I forgot to pack an item in my checked bags that might be confiscated by the TSA and it was pointed out and selected for confiscation at the TSA checkpoint I would step out of the line and either break the item and dispose of it in the nearest trashcan or find a nearby airport worker that I thought might get some use out of it and give it to them. I would not allow the TSA vendor and/or state to keep it for resale.

I have to agree with JTR357, it is legal theft, it does not make any of us safer. It is all about control. Do a search on TSA stupidity and prepare to be shocked. Read about WWII veteran Joe Foss having his Medal of Honor taken from him by the TSA because they thought it might be used as a weapon. Or the woman who was forced to remove her nipple rings with pliers before the TSA would allow her to board. Even better, read some of the airline pilot forums and listen to what they think about these policies. Your flight crew is subjected to the same search procedures as the passengers. Does it ever occur to these folks that the pilots are in the cockpit flying the plane and really don't need a weapon to hijack the plane. I also will not fly anymore. A great many of our forefathers fought and bled and died for our rights and now people are willing to give them away so they can "feel" safe.

I don't know. I have a hard time buying a used knife, period, much less a clipped knife from someone I didn't know. If someone gives
me a knife, that's one thing; to acquire a used knife is quite another. It's like breaking the bond between the knife and the rightful owner. Knives normally develop a character of their own and in these cases you don't know who owned them, what they were used for, how they were treated and so forth. One can, in these situations, seem almost like an interloper.

I would be surprised if there were any great deals to be had out there. Still, if anyone has a positive buying experience, please let us know. I'd like to know if the occasional deal ever slipped through.

Reminds me of that Ben Franklin quote.

Haha, wow, look what I found 280267613115

It is alright to post listing numbers, right? Either way, its a Spyderco Wayne Goddard model going for $22.50 right now.

I don't care if it's a Sebenza for $20,no good could ever come from that knife,or the money I sold it for.

I'm not a religious man,but I do believe "what comes around, goes aroung" ie:Karma...it all comes back to you sooner or later.

There's a moral principle involved here.At least with me.

Also:
The program has brought in more than $307,000 since it began in June 2004.

And where does that money go, eh? Charity I hope....
