Which would you trust more to take on an indefinate hiking trip through various terrains? Double edge or a longer single edge? Cooking, battoning, fending off grizzly/cougars - all around winner???

Well, I'd give the nod to the Gladius for batoning.

If this is an indefinite trip, I would probably carry a smaller knife (TB, SFNO or the like), an axe/hatchet for cutting/splitting wood, and a good rifle or shotgun.

If a cougar or grizzly gets close enough that you are going to fend it off with a knife, you are in serious trouble.

i know it is far fetched, i was just thinking of an imperfect scenario where you only had one or the other, which would do the best all around, you can do almost anything with a big blade that you can with a small blade, except detailed work, but i mean cooking as in field dressing and quartering any animals, and i dont know about a bear,(old grizzled frontiersmen were known to kill them with bowies on occasion, but i think if you had an ak-47 you could probably take a cougar face to face. I think the AK might have it beat, except for the extra edge on the gladius,

In this scenario I think the length and flat spine of AK would be best. Its also lighter and would be much more of an asset than a hinderance if hooked to a pack.

I was thinking the same thing, the AK would prob be better for defense, dull side for batoning would be better too than the gladius i think, the only thing the gladius has a one up on in my opinion would be that you could use one side for the grunt work to dull up and keep the other edge sharper for detailed work or a rainy day

we need to send that in to deadliest warrior on History Channel, tough call, ill have to burn through a few thousand brain cells to figure that one out

Not that I'd ever think about taking on a cougar with either one if avoidable in any way possible, but going by your scenario, I'd rather the extra length of the AK;that is if I saw the threat coming with enough time to prepare. I'll also say that both are not anywhere near my first choice for best all around hiking/camping edged tool. And...the extra edge, while nice for certain...defensive tasks, does present a risk for self injury also, as well as having no side that would allow you to place any part of your hand on the spine for choking up on the sword for any other task without getting cut.

Another consideration is that while one might think that a nice long knife/sword would be idea for fending off attack from a 4-legged critter, one may want to consider that the attack might come unnoticed, which means that you may already be in the critter's 'grasp', and most likely not be able to either draw the longer style knives from their sheaths, or position the tip between you and it for the thrust, where a shorter 8-10 inch bladed knife, like a bowie, can be drawn and used more deftly.

I'd rather have & use a shorter knife to craft a makeshift spear out of wood...then I have more options available. :)

for Fending off Grizzley's

My vote would have to go to skeleton key or hack - that way it wouldn't hurt quite as bad when the bear shoves it up your uh er nose :D;)

The AK would definitely be more carry friendly due to the weight difference

Maybe the question is.....who would win in a fight???the Gladius or the AK???............

THis to me would all depend on armor of the two combatants. THe ak is better for slashing and the Gladius is better at stabbing.

THe gladius would penetrate plate mail, but the Ak would just glance off chainmail while slashing.

I think the warrior with chainmail, shield and gladius would destroy the opponent with similar armor with, or without shield and an AK.

how do you baton a gladius without destroying your baton in short order? I use my AK-47 as a survival machete. It clears brush as good as any machete and chops nearly as well as any axe. I would love to have a gladius for cool factor... but the AK is gonna win outdoors IMHO.

lmao!!!

I can see the gladius with a spear for longer reach, but remember a couple of years ago when that 5'2" mom made that cougar run away when it was attacking her daughter, it can be done. 90% of cougar attacks are stealth, but if i am walking thru dense bush, you better believe i will have a blade in hand, unless its open area where i can see, you are pretty much screwed against a bear unless you are jet li with a blade i think. Knifehunter, are you sure the gladius would pierce deeper than the ak? i know it is prob sharper at the tip, but the tanto design is supposed to rock at penetrating, and the blade is thinner so wouldn't it be more PSI after the first inch or 2? maybe i am wrong, i just see the ak piercing thru chainmail and steel a little better IMHO

AK easily! Why? Because I don't have the Gladious! :D

Isn't the gladious double edged? If so then that may be a problem with batonning. But I easily baton with my AK, can make shavings for fire starting, pry wood apart if needed, cut up food, etc... And the length is nice to keep things at a distance. Good stuff.

My thought EXACTLY;)!!!
