AK-47 vs. Gladius???

I have a WAKI, not an AK and it is similar to the AK. I am leaving for the Wyo Teton Mountains on Wed. One week ago a Grizzly chewed up a guy right where we are going to camp. I will have the guy that made it up the tree with the camera send pics of what I did with the WAKI, if it comes to that. I am sure I will not be around to show them myself!!!! LOL!!!!!

All you have to do is out run the camera guy and the bear will do the rest.:D

I'd go with the AK47, more versatile, for the reasons stated above.

you could always grind down 50-75% of one side of a gladius, ala don fogg's 'cloud cutter':

The gladius wouldn't look like this when it's done, but the concept of having a flat spine allows for push/draw cutting as well as batoning while still maintaining that forward edge for low brush clearing and generally abusive chopping tasks.

thats pretty cool, i just received my first AK and Gladius in the mail, I didnt realize how much sturdier the gladius feels when you actually get to handle it, the Ak def. has a %*$& your pants factor too, I am addicted and am now an infi-holic

So which do you like more?

I have both. I prefer the AK by far. It's actually a useful blade. I've used it to knock off small limbs when cutting fire wood, clear brush on the lot next to mine and I've batoned with it just for fun. It swings very fast. With the extra handle you can really get some leverage and swing very fast.

The Gladius is heavy. Someone described it as an entry tool I can see that. While I won't part with the Gladius, it's weight (at least in my hands) makes it solid, but cumbersome. To be fair though, I have not really used the Gladius.

If I had to choose between the two blades for either field use or combat, I would definately choose the AK.

I still dont know which one i like better, and i know that sounds like a cop-out but they feel cool for different reasons just picking them up. If I heard something go bump in the night in my house and had to grab one for protection, prob the gladius for the compactness, the AK is definately more of a swinger, you feel safer swinging it, when i swing the Gladius, you dont have as much control when you try to stop the swing because of the weight, and the double edge def makes it more likely that you will hurt yourself, i will tell you one thing, i def would not want to be on the receiving end of the gladius tip, and if you had to, you could make a hell of a spear by wrapping it on a tree limb

not until they make the 'supposedly real' skunk ratchete. that 1 handed 20" (18/20/24 I forget) full flat grind, reciprene c handled sr101 machete picture was pretty much perfect from tip to pommel.

Its not a heavy sword at all actually. It's just that your not in any condition to use a sword. It takes lots of training (with practice swords and weighted rods) to get your arms (and the rest of your body) into the kind of shape that you would need to even attempt to wield a Gladius or any other sword with any skill. Motor memory comes into play in this regard also.

Katana styled swords aren't meant to deal with with the situations one would ever encounter here in the real world. They are at this point relegated to dueling sword status because of there length. You need a lot of space to wield one. Believe me indoors you want something shorter.

Outdoors, two handed AK vs. Gladius with shield? Really at that point it would depend on the skill of the wielders. But in general, sword and shield has a huge advantage over sword only, no matter how long the sword only blade is. Sword on sword? Gladius will deliver heavier blows; its shorter length and duel edge will negate the advantage of speed the lighter AK has. But the AK is longer and is a better defensive weapon with its single edge and is plenty strong with todays steels to deflect blows from the heavier Gladius. Dueling? AK should win sword on sword. CQB? Gladius with out a doubt. On a battle field? Gladius, as you'll have a shield. Also the Gladius is a formation style weapon; your fellow soldiers will also more than likely be wielding similar weapons to the Gladius. Zombie hunting? Well take your pick as the zombies aren't going to be wielding anything at all... mostly...hopefully.
