AK Bowie etch..

finished the etch to the AK bowie, and don't have pix yet. I do have an intereting thing to share, tho. I etched using the same FeCl that I usually use for etching brass, bronze, and copper. As I poured it over the blade, I noted that the copper was coming out of solution and plating the blade. Well, most of the copper came off while I neutralized the FeCl with baking soda, but one place was solidly plated. The tempered area of the khuk, where there is more carbon in the steel, was the area where the copper bonded nicely. BTW, this Bowie is hardened out to within 2 inches or less from the tip, thus making the whole belly tempered. I don't think I'll have any tip bending issues with this one.

Makes me want to dip another khuk into the solution, just to see that copper sunrise shape on the blade.
