AK Bowie Review & All-Leather Sheath Pix

Bill and Brian

This does not solve the other problems you mentioned but how about lacing the sheath together. The Saki would only have to punch the holes.

If the sarkis are too wimpy to stitch heavy leather ... do they have any saddlemakers in Nepal? Or harness makers.... Those guys know how to stitch thick leather -- they stack up layers an inch thick and push an awl right through it.

Thanks again, Will & Bill.

Bill, no problem, your prediction doesn't surprise me one bit. In fact, I would be very surprised if the sarkis decided to break with tradition.

I am surprised that brass hardware would be difficult to obtain in Nepal, particularly in light of the fact that almost all khukuris & scabbards incorporate some amount of brass. Lacing would certainly be an option & that is probably how I will go for the one I'll make for myself. BTW, I prepunched the stitching holes in the individual layers & trimmed the pieces to size.

Cheers,
Brian

We can get the brass but the hardware is often hard to find and making grommets, snaps and the like is not easy. I don't know of any harness or saddle makers but I have seen some saddles and harness on various animals so they must be around somewhere.
