Hi, Just got my AK. Trying to find a Sheath to go with it. With AK, I kind of thinking of a simple wooden sheath like what Zatoichi movie uses.

Do you know where I can find Sheath makers like that??

or maybe wood & metal combination like the world war 2 japanese blades?

Wood and metal combo is great too man, i was thinking about only wood because of lower production cost.

That's an interesting idea. If you go this route, post some pics! :D

Japanese wooden sheaths are made of white oak. It is a soft wood that will not withstand the friction of crinkle epoxy finish on the blade.

I have really been wondering if you could make a sheath like your talking about but use G10. Cut a long strip in half and then use a router to carve out the channel. Then figure out a way to put them back together, which I really don't think would be too hard, and shape them into a sheath.

Would G10 work? Is it expensive? Can you get it in a size big enough for this project?

I'm sure that Jerry's itching to get rid of some Beater Green! ;)

I already have a maple scabbard all worked out. Now I just need an AK. ;)

If I make one, I'll post pics and list all of my mistakes so others can laugh at me - uh, I mean avoid making the same ones that I do. :)

Silas,

The response you got on the maker's forum was spot on...

It is possible to get material in the appropriate size, but it is, and I do mean, VERY expensive.

Wear on cutting tools is also horrendous (siq). Then there's that piddling detail of breathing fibre glass particles (respirator will cure that easily...) and the STINK...

Rob Criswell used to make SUPERB G-10 sheaths, and I thought about using that design, but alas, I will not use another man's design without his permission. Additionally, cost in materials would make the retail price significantly high. -That, coming from me, should set off an alarm or 2-:jerkit:

I gave up finding those custom wood case!!! Yet I have used my limited knowledge with a bit creativity. A REAL REAL Ghetto sheath.

Cue stick hard shell protective case!!

howz that guys!! i cut open the top zipper cap off. The protective hard shell cue case left with protective foam. With AK is easy, you just push in there. I will cut through the foam. Here you go. You got a sheath, it is also come with carrying belt. haha, I kind of like it. I kind of think, it is better than anything!! the foam protects the blade, you won't even creat scratch mark!

For those who don't have the lot of money to buy a sheath at the same time want to protect a beautiful AK, I think it is good way to go for it. it looks some what semi japanese like. the best thing is, no problem carry around EXCEPT, the law will stop you.

Give a Try.

pfft, you call that ghetto. i made 2 pvc pipe sheaths. thats ghetto.

Field expedient sheath was made from a plastic GI 18" machete sheath and a roll of OD 90mph tape. Split the rear edge of the sheath open about 8" insert AK and a yard stickfor expansio. Tape the slit and good to go. Not pretty but works. Also can make a drop loop with the tape for carry w/out belt hanger. Works better for me then taping the entire cardboard it came in.
