Let me start off by saying this made me nervous because it is an expensive piece of steel for me. But it's just one of those things. Is it practical... most likely not but you never know. For me it's just fun. So here is a short clip of me throwing my AK. I was able to get it to stick pretty consistantly after a few practice throws.

or

(2.29 MB = same clip but with an "erase-in" effect)

When I first started I was missing more than I hit. In the process I noticed that one of the micarta slabs had loosened a little. Probably from one of the throws where the handle slapped sideways against the target. Just at one bolt fastener. Here is the quick fix I did.

A few well placed knocks with the tire mallet in the back ground and it tightened right up. It feels as good as new. I won't be throwing it too often but I will do lots of chopping. If it ever loosens I will either drill out the old fastener and replace it or send it to Garth and pay to have the pros fix it. The pic above is the after as you can see. I'll try to remember to take a before pic for such instances next time.

I doubt you'll be paying for it if you send it in to garth

I am not worried either way as this was certainly an instance where I was using the sword for purposes other than it was intended for. So I do not expect the warranty to cover it. It was my fault. And I have done some heavy chopping in the past 10 minutes and so far the handle seems perfect.

NICE!!!

If it was not intended for that what was it intended for?

A well aimed shot too!!

BTW: I used my wife's crock stick for a few seconds to touch up the AK and it's wicked sharp again.

Note: The creature from The Legend of Boggy Creek can be heard in the background!

Very cool. Remind me never to get "downwind" of you when you're throwing something--you are too good at making the pointy end hit first.

You and Dave Brown are starting to convice me that those AK47s are a necessary tool to have in ones box. Now to start saving those pennies ;)

nice throw
congratulations
what percentage of throwa is that good

I'll be honest :p I was making about 20% at first. Then after about 5 minutes it was more like 70%. Then it went down a little because I started to varry my distance. I only threw for about 20 minutes and then when I discovered the loose handle I stopped to go inside to fix it, clean it, sharpen it, and put her away. I think with some more practice I could throw it as well as my NO-E. It really feels good to throw. Not the #1 intended use for a sword but fun none-the-less. I think I'll do more chopping than throwing but it's good to know that it's a good thrower if needed.

in the 70's I was friends with someone from special forces. When he got back from Nam he was a really impressive knife thrower. He could throw most any knife from any distance. He taught me about throwing. He had me throw a knife making one revolution till I could get it in every time. Then we measured the distance and doubled it. Two revolutions. WHen we got good at two we started to try various distances. I never practiced enough to get good but it sure was fun. In those days I only knew Randall and Loveless. Busse had yet to be born. Hope I get a chance to throw one of my Busses but I hate to mar them. Maybe when I have more knives I'll try
Cheers

Cool story. Did your SF friend ever mention whether or not he had thrown a knife for SD? Or is that just a movie thing? ;)

He never threw it in battle, only in fun. Never throw a knife in a fight. 9 times out of ten you end up arming your enemy and disarming yourself. He really knew his stuff. He once told me to try to stab him with a hunting knife I had. I thought he was kidding so I did not try too hard at first but every time I tried to stick him I ended up with him controlling my knife completely. So I tried harder and harder. He always stopped me and managed to take control of the knife or my arm. He said he was able to do this by watchng my feet and where i put my weight. He always knew what I was about to do before I knew myself. It was very impressive. He gave me some lessons. He would tape up the knife leaving only about 3/16 of an inch of steel exposed before we started. That way if you made a mistake you got stuck but not badly. I learned a few things but not much. Takes a lot of time and we were busy with other stuff but I never forgot that stuff. The guy later became a hunting guide in Alaska and a teacher of Arctic survival for the Army. Haven't heard from him since 1980. Tyrkon I see you are a science teacher. I am as well. Science and computer and library. Cool!

Yep, I agree with this. I've trained for nearly 15 years with a knife and feel comfortable with it in hand. But not throwing it. However, knives like the NO-E would hurt bad mo matter how it hit you. Thanks for the info. Very cool.

I throw my AK so you guys don't have to. That and the fact that I don't want to be called "girlie-man" again by Dave B. :p

I think I am in love !!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D :D

But since I am not gay & you are married or something..........................got a single sister  :D

Awesome Awesome

Now that is a helluva lot of steel to be throwing around :) Sure looks fun! Nice aim BTW.
