Is there anyone out there that owns an Al Dippold knife or tool?

If so, could you please tell us about it and post any pictures you may have.

Thank you

I own a Dippold custom damascus cigar cutter with 18k gold highlights, woodgrain damascus body, polished damascus blade, hand made nuts and bolts, german markings on edges, incredible!

I will post pic soon.

I've been admiring Al's work for several years in magazines and at custom websites like Knife Art.

I finally got to meet and talk with Al for a while at the New York Custom show last November. He is a very humble man who makes fantastic works of art. They are everybit as nice to handle as they are to look at. He even wrote is own name into some damascus steel. His damascus is first rate, and his other knifemaking skills are very very good as well. Sounds like you have a sweet little piece. Sorry, I have no pictures, but This is his web page at the Art Knife Collectors Association web site: www.artknife.com

I cannot afford one of his awesome mosaic folders, but I did manage to talk him into making me a small, carry size bowie. Blade is 6" of forged, flat ground, marquenched L6. Nickel silver oval guard and desert ironwood handle. This sucker is ground thin and is scary sharp! I had to wait a good while to get it, as he is a busy, busy man, but worth it. It has a serial number of 52 marked on the blade. It seems that he hasnt made that many fixed blades.

Danbo, I also has a chance to visit his shop and forge area, it was incredibly clean and the most organized shop I have ever seen anywhere.

Do you have a pic of you Dippold knife that you can post?

Thanks

I've been an admirer of Al's work for some time, but like many, don't yet own any of his high end pieces. (He's also a heck of a nice guy to speak with at the shows).

On the other hand, I do own one of his simple pieces, a nice little neck knife of hand rubbed 1095 and ash scales(from Al's farm).

As a bonus, the slick (multi-carry)kydex sheath was made by Al's friend Bud Nealy and features magnetic retention.

Wow! Blues, that is a beautiful knife. I really like both the color of the scales, and the finish on the blade.

I remember a few years ago, when Al was selling those little knives. He caught me at a time when I had zero moolah, but I wanted one of those really bad. He had one in particular that was 1095 and African Blackwood handles that was extra clean. I wonder if he will bring any of those to the Little Rock show this weekend? One can only hope!

Wow, great pictures and fine examples of some of his work. The guy is a master! His carvings and artwork that he incorporates into his work gives it a special look and feel. I like the German Hallmarks also.

On the cigar cutter, the handle or body looks like metal woodgrain. I mean you would swear it is black wood, with all the ripples and different levels and layers. The blade is an awesome high gloss damascus tight wiggle pattern. The body has 18k gold highlights inserted flush.

Well, I managed to come home with 3 of Al's Knives. Two of them are just about like the picture here, but with walnut burl on one and red oak on the other. Blades are marquenched 52100. Both come with Bud Nealy magnet kydex sheaths and are very sharp. The other Dippold knife I bought is a small damascus neck knife with 1095/15N20 twist pattern damascus and pearl overlays pinned on with 18KT gold pins. No sheath, but Kenny Rowe fixed that situation. I was going to give one of the kydex sheathed knives to a friend of mine, but, Nah, I dont think so.

Danbo, How was the show? Was there alot of people around Al's table? He must have sold everything again. He usually sells everything he brings.

The knives that you bought sound in-credible!!! Anything Dippold is a generational piece.

As you can tell from my posts, I loved the show! Hell, I was jumping around like a spyder monkey on crack! I saw the Massey bowie, and I was all over it like a chicken on a June bug! Kevin Pensinger commented on how he gets a kick out of watching me at the show. To me, this is one of the best shows out there. Kinda like a concentrated Blade show. Same kinda stuff, but more cozy environment. At the Blade show, if you see a knife you are interested in, you had better buy it while you have it in your hands, because there are a half dozen guys standing next to you waiting for you to put the knife down on the table. In Little Rock, there might be one guy waiting. The Dippold knives are going to be used. The Massey and the Fitch, maybe(probably) not.
