Al Mar Back Up 2 or Spyderco Street Beat?

Almars are great but for just about the same price AUS8 kind of stinks. Plus with the Perrin you get a multi position kydex sheath. It's great For all the CCW methods. IWB, SOB ect.......

Can't comment on the Al Mar or Street Beat, but if you find the Perrin Bowie, grab it, you'll never be sorry. It's been one of my favourites for years. I've been considering buying the Street Beat 'little brother' to get the same ergonomics in a slightly smaller and dressier package.

penetrate a skull multiple times ;)?
Perhaps not the best choice

That said, I am a big fan of the Street Beat - if only I could carry it legally.

Hey I was thinking of buying the Street Beat too! Can somebody who owns one please tell me the exact width of the sheath at its widest point? And maybe length as well? I want to know if it will fit in the utility pocket of my Carhartt work jeans. Thanks!

Seperately, I wonder why the vast majority of Al Mar knives are AUS 8? Not a bad steel, but for the prices Al Mar commands from the consumer, you'd think they offer something a little better.

LOL. Just saying..... I think that's the toughest thing it could be asked to do in it design parameter. So no worries on breaking.

Hi J Curd,

I would be curious as to why you would think the Street Beat had a "weak tang". 4.0mm thick VG-10 X 1/2" thick (the thinnest point) should hold a half ton. I wouldn't want to try to break it without good cover. From where do you get your thoughts?

I will say that both have very high build quality. As to cost, VG-10 is more expensive than AUS-8 to purchase and process.

I have this high quality production blade and I must totally agree. The blade is very thick and you would need an awful lot of force to break it even at its thinnest point.

If I have to choose, I take the spyderco, VG 10 is really a good steel. I find it easy to sharp. And cocoricco, like me Fred Perrin is french and he's a specialist of knives use, he write one or 2 book on this subject.
