Today, I received an Al Mar SERE 2000 from a trade I made, and I just have to say that I LOVE this knife! Before today, I wouldn't have owned a liner-lock, but after "playing" with this knife for awhile, and holding it in a TIGHT grip, and not having the lock fail (like it did with my ex-Spyderco Military), I am sold on this Al Mar folder!

In-fact, it just might replace my beloved Spyderco SS SE Police model as my main EDC!..

...Now, if only this SERE 2000 came with a 4 & 1/4 inch blade like my Police model...:).

I have been considering purchasing a sere 2000 and have not been able to decide on it or not. I like the Military, the sere 2000, and possibly the afck, but not sure on what to get. I've heard of the lock failing, but your's didnt. The whole lock failing thing makes me leary of getting one. How do you think it will be as an EDC? I would use mine for everything. I want one that I can have with me at all times and feel prepared. I use to carry many knives at once but want to carry one folder and my SAK. I will never go with out my SAK. Anyway sorry for rambling on, what do you think, should I get one?

Get an Al Mar SERE 2000...The lock problems, I think were with the early models...Mine is as solid as a rock. One thing that I really like about it is the pocket-clip; It is ambidextrious (I'm a "lefty"), and it allows the knife to ride VERY low in the pocket. Also, that VG-10 steel...WOW!!...This knife is SHARP!!! Also, it is a VERY solid folder.

BTW...I carried it for awhile today, and I really like it as an EDC.

Sounds like a winner. I needed that push to convince me. I have thought about getting this knife for about a year now and have bought others in its place. I wish now that I had bought it a year ago and had my dollars back to buy something that is not sitting in a drawer doing nothing.

You tryin' to make me cry, Dann?

...well it worked!!!!!

(just kiddin', cryin's for sissies!!!)

Seriously though, I'm glad to hear you like it so much. Sounds like a real keeper. Enjoy.

Dann,
Now you're talking! I've had a SERE 2K in my daily EDC rotation for the past two years and I love it. It's a stout mutha, and the finish on this beast is (I think) as good as it gets in a production knife. In the evening, one of my last tasks for the day is to take our dog outside before we all hit the hay. I'm usually standing there in the dark, slowly opening my SERE so I can hear that "thwock." You know the sound!

What a great knife, and I'm always surprised when I see them go for such low prices on the trading forums. Talk about a lot of bang for your buck. :D geegee

geegee,

I'm not even going to mention what I traded for this Al Mar SERE 2000...As I'm SURE it'd make you cry, as it did with "blastjv".:D.

To say that I'm happy with this one would be a gross understatement...I have found a new "favorite folder".:).

blastjv,

If it makes you feel alittle better, this one did have a small nick in the blade, (about 1/4 inch from the tip), and some scratches/scuffs on the blade and pocket clip...(However, I sharpened-out the little nick, and sandpapered the scratches/scuffs away, and now it is perfect.).

I'm glad to hear that you like the SERE. Since I've been on the Forums I noticed that our knife choices are about the same (Sifu's, HUGE Cold Steel folders, and the Police model)

There are a lot of things I like about the SERE but perhaps the thing that stands out most is it's overall fit and finish...one great knife...now if they would just make one in a 5 inch blade:eek: then it can replace the Camillus Maxx as my EDC

...A SERE 2000 with a 5 inch blade?...Eventho I was thinking that a 4 & 1/4 inch blade would be nice (to match the blade-length of my Spydie Police models), 5 inches would be cool, or maybe even 5.4 inches (like the blade of the REKAT Sifu) would really be cool!.:).

BTW...I took my Dremmel to the edge of the scale near the "lefty" thumb-stud to make it even more "left thumb-friendly" with a dish-out like what's on the other side, and it turned out GREAT, and somehow I even got it to match the factory made dish-out's profile perfectly.

One other thing that I did with my SERE 2000 to make it even more perfect was to sand-off the SHARP top edges of the thumb-studs. As I continued to "play" with mine last night, I noticed my thumb starting to get sore, and then noticed that the top ridge of both thumb-studs were almost as sharp as the blade , so a little time with some 600 grit wet/dry (folded) sandpaper solved that problem in about 20 minutes.

...Now if I can figure-out a way to make the blade grow another inch or inch and a 1/2, this knife would be TOTALLY perfect!.:).

As I continued to "play" with mine last night, I noticed my thumb starting to get sore,
About three days after I got my first SERE 2K, I actually had the skin on my right thumb split (like when you get real dry, chapped skin). Okay, probably time to stop doing that for a few days....
I felt like such a girlie man. geegee

I also noticed that where you (I) push on the liner lock to release the blade was pretty sharp, too. I have fixed that also.

Dang, this knife just keeps getting better and better.:D.

I have said since I have owned mine when they first came out that it is without a doubt the FINEST prod. liner lock made today bar none. Put shrink tubing over the thumb studs and it will make it buttery on your thumb to open and give you a better purchase to boot. A 5" knife I think would be to big for this model. It is big now. It is built like a tank and has great steel. It is the only knife I have owned that is a liner lock that I haven't taken apart to make it better. I am into carrying smaller folders now but this thing goes with me in the woods when stump shooting or bowhunting. Keep'em sharp

PS look really closely at the overall fit and finish of the knife. You will be amazed at the quality. Custom makers can't do any better imho. Well maybe a fancier deisgn for the scale etc. but not a better put together liner lock.

I had been thinking about the SERE 2000 for some time as well. Mine also arrived today. I can't really add anyting to what has been said, but it is sure a keeper. BTW I purchased mine from www.spoonrivercutlery.com and was very please with the service and price.

I bought one from Artsig 1 about two weeks ago. I had no idea that the fit and finish would rival my LCC and take it's place as the one I fondle while watching TV. The SERE 2000 is everything that was said about it on the forum. Mine is a bit tight, in fact much tighter than my LCC. Is that common?

This knife is built with strength in mind. It was on my "have to get" list and I am glad I did. Artsig 1 had polished the black blade to a finish that is now like a black satin almost antique patina look. Hard to explain and even more difficult to get to show with my digital camera. I really like the effect.

You can't go wrong with the SERE 2000! It is a fantastic knife with excellent fit and finish. Mine was smooth as silk right out of the box. A light flick of the thumb and it opens. I personally think it is much better than a Spyderco Military (I do have one of them as well). I am not very confident with the milly's lock. The SERE locks up like a vault with no blade play. It is my EDC since I got it about 6 months ago.
