Al Mar SERE 2000, some opinions please

You won't be disappointed
After edcing mine for the last three weeks, (misc cardboard, packaging, shrink wrap, twine, coardage, zip ties, ect) After all that, all I've done is to strop it on a strop loaded with green compound.
It just keeps on getting sharper :D

Yep! Through the years of carrying my Sere (and putting it to good use daily) I only had to sharpen it twice a year. Sometimes once a year. If you strop it and run it on a smooth steel once in a while, it'll stay sharp a good long time. Excellent knives.

I have a green D/A conversion SERE 2000 (scale/bolster automatic) - I really like the knife, but 1 small thing - the conversion pushes the blade out slightly, and so the tip of the blade is a bit too close to the edge of the knife. That plus a relatively weak detent, and I've had it open in my pocket a few times now - at least twice it caught my pant pocket between the blade and the handle, making for a difficult, sharp, bundled and awkward moment.

I like the heft, the "clink" it makes when it locks up and the liner snaps in place, the great semi-agressive G10 scales -- I just wish it had a stronger detent.

You bought a truly great knife, OP. Only reason I don't have one is I wish they had a 1/4" longer blade. Dammit.

But I'm breaking down.....

Thanks people. Very interesting to read about the DA conversion issues - I had given a great deal of consideration to doing just that with the SERE. I think the logical path is to see how I like it for awhile before doing anything. I suppose a small pouch of calf leather might help solve your problem though.

Thanks again for the votes of confidence. Though it may take a few weeks, I will eventually have it in my hands and will get some pics up. Then I can also put my Brend into the cabinet to reflect on its own glory for a bit :-)

I used to own one. That was back in like 2008 when they were a good deal at $130. Now the price is insane. The one I had I didn't trust. If you put pressure on the back of the blade while observing the liner lock, you could see it begin to move towards the unlock side. Not a properly executed design of the Walker liner lock.

Great knife. Custom quality in a production. I have the auto conversion too n love it. Mine is perfect in every way. Highly recommend getting one to any that ask. You will love it. Enjoy it. Congrats.

I met Al at a SOF convention in Arizona before he passed away. He was really dedicated to making knives that were of very high quality. I just ordered the all black SERE 2000 folder and I am sure that the quality of build will be there. I also own Microtechs, Benchmades, Spydercos, Etc. and would put the SERE 2000 in the same class. It has a timeless look to it and I am sure you will enjoy yours.
