Does any one have any experience with the Al Mar SERE 2000 and is VG10 a good blade steel?

Thanks

Most excellent knife!! Since I received mine a couple of weeks ago I seem to carry it much more than I thought I would.

Here at BF most of us agreed that this is the best tactical folder you can get for less than $150 period.

I had a SERE 2000, but got rid of it because the liner lock consistently failed a light - to moderate spine whack test. I'm just not going to risk my fingers using a so-called survival knife that might not stay open when things get dicey. If the lock had been reliable, the SERE 2000 would have really been a knife to love, though.

Sorry, I don't agree at all. My choice for the best tactical folder in this price range would be the Benchmade 710. It has a better lock than the SERE 2000 and a longer, recurve blade. It's slimmer and lighter, too, so it's a more comfortable carry than the SERE.

I should mention that I have abused and I do mean abused my SERE 2Ks on many an occasion. I had one that I just beat the ever loving snot out of. It never failed.
I have recently traded and sold off all of my SEREs but was so fired up after thinking about them again today that I just traded for another one. Thanks for bringing it up.

This is one of the few knives that I have never handled but most of you sure seem to like it so I don't think I'll be disappointed. I ordered one earlier today.

Thanks for your comments.

Nathan, all I can say is that you must have gotten a bad one. Every SERE 2000 that I have ever seen has been as tight as a bank vault. The knife is overbuilt, solid and uses great VG10 steel. My only complaint with the knife is that due to the positioning of the clip, the knife carries a little low in the pocket, and makes for a not so quick deployment.

Yeah, I know. Fit and finish on that knife are excellent, and the liner lock seems bulletproof. That's why I was so shocked when the lock failed so easily. Shocked and disappointed, because I really liked the SERE 2000. I don't really think I got a bad knife, though.
I just think that the liner lock design is not as safe as others. Not to say that it can't be done well, just that it's harder to get right.

Hey Recon!
Corpsman Up! I definitely read you 5 by 5!
I'm guessing you were with the rest of that Onslow Beach Crew down at Camp Swampy?
E-mail me please I need some info.

I received my sere2000 this morning before 10am. I was expecting it next week. I ordered it yesteday from Vinny's. The knife is better than I expected.

Thanks!

I have a SERE 2000 and find it to be one of the best production folders on the market. Evidently there were a few with lock problems, but mine is very strong.

Nathan S: I am curious as to what Al Mar Co. said when you complained and sent your knife back. They seem like very nice folks and easy to please.

Got mine this week :)

(Well, it's d/a, but Sere anyway...)

Haven't had time very much to use mine, but this knife has that "someting". Hard to explain what "that" overall is, but it sure WORKS!
If you put one of these in your pocket, you know you're "equiped" - and very well indeed.

The blade is - by the way - scarry sharp.

I almost bought one of these last weekend at a knife show. The knife seemed very solid. Lockup was very tight. Exceptional fit and finish. I would say that it was by far the sharpest edge I have ever seen on a knife from the factory...probably the sharpest edge period.

I just might pick one up next time.

I thought about one of these after all the great reviews, but from the appearance the clip is not reversible, is that true?

If so, I can't see spending that money for a totally lefty-unfriendly knife. Oh well.

I've had one for about a month now. Love it. However, I've had two problems. First off, its lock has started to develop some play. When I very first got it, it would lock up so solid that it would have absolutely no play pushing down on the blade against the lock. However, now it has a decent amount of play and I can watch the liner lock bar move when I push on the blade. Even as far as it moves, though, the bar is still COMPLETELY engaged. Secondly, the knife started to sqeak. When I would open it, it would make a distinctive dry metal on metal squeak/scratch/groan. It irritated me to the point that I put whatever I could find in there to make the noise go away, which happened to be Hoppe's Lubricating Oil. I don't particularly like using an oil like this since its messy and seems like it just attracts dirt. So I've been keeping an eye out for some cheap Militec-1 or something.

Should I send this back or are my experiences typical? The knife has seen some use opening packages and a couple other minor tasks and thats about it.

Great knife regardless!

I can't speak for everyone, but that isn't typical of mine. I have carried and used mine a lot and it still locks up like a vault. No blade play at all. There is also no noise such as you describe. I believe I would give Al Mar a call.
