Al Mar SERE 2000

I've had a little time to get to know my Sere 2000 and have come to the conclusion that it is the best folder I own...even better than my other folders costing more.

The knife is very sturdy, great lock up and came so sharp that I would be afraid to shave with it! I added a very short lanyard to make it easier to pull out of my pocket making it just about perfect!

Does any one know if there is a 3" bladed version of this knife?

My SERE is my only EDC, and it is my favorite folding knife. My SERE does develop a squeak and increased friction, when I countlessly open and close it. The squeak on my knife is coming from the small raised bump on the liner and the blade. I found that by disassembling the knife and cleaning it, cures the problem for a month or so. I was surprised to hear that someone was having trouble with the lockup, during a spine test. Mine has survived a moderate baseball bat on an open vise test. I have noticed, that by increasing the pivot tension, you can adjust the centering of the blade, between the liners when it is closed. If the pivot is not tight enough, the liner won't squarely secure the blade, when the blade is opened. Try tightening the pivot with a hex wrench. Push and hold down the liner lock, this allows the blade to move freely, then adjust the pivot. I am looking at my SERE now, which is impaled into a replaced wooden stool (the stool was replaced, because my Busse destroyed the first one), and the edge of the liner is even with the blade. My knife still locks up securely and the liner makes a nice "pop".

Nathan S: I am curious as to what Al Mar Co. said when you complained and sent your knife back. They seem like very nice folks and easy to please.

I live in Italy, so sending the knife back is a little more complicated than it might be for someone living in the USA. I didn't feel like bothering; I gave the knife away. If I want a survival folder now, I use one of my Sebenzas.

Nathan, You must of got a defective knife. If not, I am really surprised the lock failed. Well, like they say in my country, "THSFOLUFRUKNHTI" - (better luck next time).
:D

VG-10 is a great knife steel. It gets sharp, stays sharp and is quite stainless.

Al Mar is a good company and the SERE2K that I had came very sharp with very good fit and finish. The clip is one of my favorite features. I can't believe more folder manufacturers do not use a similar design. It allows for low ride in the pocket. The lock on my was strong and solid. It was smooth in action and no play when locked.

The reasons I traded the knife include the bulk and weight relative to blade size and the handle to blade size bothered me. While the blade was well designed for certain purposes, the uses I generally engage a folder in benefit from a different blade shape. None of the reasons speak ill of the knife, just that the traits of this particular knife were not particularly suited for my needs.

If they only made one with a slightly recurved blade, with alittle more belly and thinned the handles a eigth inch or so, I'd grab one in a minute ... and I don't even like liner locks.

The SERE2K happens to be my only EDC knife, as well. I must say, it was everything I had hoped for, and more. My knife definately does not fail the spine whack test (tried it again just now), and I have not had a problem with the lock loosening up or the knife making noise. I do keep a drop of Breakfree in it, though. The knife slices very nicely for how it's shaped.

My only complaint is that I got some battery corrosion stains on it, and I can't seem to get them off.. only succeeded in scratching up one side.

I have a feeling this knife will remain my EDC for a long time.. though I'm getting a Busse Assault Shaker to accompany it. :D

the SERE 2000 was my first knife in my young collection and I never evre regretted buying it, it's a top knife!

-nice looking
-very sturdy, both handle and blade
-no blade play
-good lockup
-smooth opening and closing
-easy maintenace and cleaning
-compact enough to carry arouns yet substantial enough for most tasks
-a no-nonsense knife!!

The only drwaback to me is that I once had it opening inadvertently in my pocket while running, but I turned the screw somewhat and now it's better.
