Al Mar SERE or Microtech Mini Socom Elite?

Hello all,

charlesfmason - the blade on my SERE 2000 is stamped with MOKI/Japan.

ReconTech - the SERE 2000 is available in an all black finish, but it costs about $15USD more if I recall correctly.

VG10 is regarded as a high quality steel. Holds a nice edge. My SERE came hair popping sharp, it felt sharper than my Benchmade TSEK, and comparable to my Benchmade Mini Grip, NIB.

My impressions after having my S2K for a few days now are...

Size : Perfect size. I downsized from the BM TSEK (3.9" blade) to the SERE 2K, and it is performing admirably.

Blade : Hair popping shop NIB. Nice spear point with the false edge. Grinds were slightly uneven near the base of the blade, otherwise very nice. This is a user for me, so I'm not upset about a slightly uneven grind, the edge is still there!

Handle/Ergos : Very good so far. The "bell bottomed" handle offers a very secure grip, the G10 is lightly textured, and it feels ROCK SOLID.

Lock : This is my first return to Liner locks, from AXIS locks... The SERE has a very thick liner lock, and it snaps into place very solidly, and to some dismay, with a very prounounced "CLICK!". It sounds like an auto (hope that makes sense). But lockup is nice, and the liner doesn't tear your hand apart trying to close it. Well designed. I've never had a liner lock close on me, so I'll leave that debate to the archives...

Clip : At first I thought to myself "what the hell?" but after some time getting used to it, I like it. Alot! It is a VERY DEEP Carry. Basically only the clip is visible from the outside. I like it because it keeps the knife out of the way, and doesn't interfere with moving your leg. (my other larger knives which jut out of the pocket can 'catch' you funny if you move the wrong way, again I hope this makes sense). My model is the satin finished blade with a matching and very visible clip (non coated).

Quality : although subjective, the SERE has become my favourite knife. A flick of the thumb studs and it snaps open with authority. Flawless action, and I don't believe the overall feel is too clunky (bear in mind I previously carried a TSEK which is 5.4+" closed). IMHO, the SERE 2000 is a very solid, well done knife, and with some looking around, a very, very good price.

My experiences, hope they help.

Regards,

Shaun.
