Al Mar Shrike Passaround Update...

Medic, thanks for staying on top of this and keeping us all updated.

I don't think anyone was doubting that you shipped it or anything, just complaining about the mail. This time of year it all slows downs for the next week or so.

Looking forward to receiving this in a few weeks.

Mike,

I never meant to imply that you didn't send it. Our P.O. SUCKS!! :barf: It has really gone down hill over the last few years. We used to have ONE carrier, and the mail was very reliable. Now we could have any one of three characters, and God knows where the mail is. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I'm sure it won't be the last. Sorry for the venting and Mike I was NEVER in doubt that you mailed it. I will keep everyone updated.

At 11:40 AM my doorbell rang, and there was a Postal carrier - with the Shrike. :D I just sent Mike an e-mail to let him know that it arrived, and now I wanted to let everyone else know.

OK, I just opened the box. First impressions - large, opens easily - even lefty, and yes, I see what Mike means about the Micarta still being smooth. It's also pretty light for a blade this size. That's it for now. I just wanted to let everyone know it got here, and that I NEVER doubted Mike's word - just my P.O.'s work ethic.

Using it for 3 days would have me sending it out on Wednesday, but since that's Christmas I will wait until Thursday to ship. Maybe the service will be more reliable as things start to slow down for them. I will also post my review of it at that time.

Thanks to Mike at New Graham and Dave for putting this together. :)

Yeah, I know, but I just didn't want somebody else to think something wasn't right. Heck, the passaround has been stuck on me for so long with the warranty issue, and now it wasn't shipped when it was supposed to... Somebody out there might have thought I was giving a runaround or something. Glad you finally got the knife though.

Later,

Mike

Fisherk, and all the passaround guys,

Because of the delay in repairs, I won't be in Connecticut when my time comes up, I'll be in Arizona. I sent fisherk an email with my address here. I know this screws up the geograpical order a bit, but I'd be happy to keep the knife for 5 days instead of 7 to make up for the lost time, and I could ship it faster. Unfortunately it wouldn't help to reorder me, because by the time the knife gets out west I'll be back in CT. (Christmas break from college) Anyway, I hope this is OK with everyone, and sorry for the snafu.

Nathan

Nathan,

I have no problem sending it to AZ instead of CT, as long as it's OK with everyone else. I'll be shipping it out on the 26th, so unless your P.O. sucks more than mine, you should receive it by January 5th.

As far as the knife goes, I've been using it today while rearranging my home office - cutting up a lot of cardboard and a lot of various other tasks. So far, so good - the Shrike has worked great. It's a little large for an EDC here in PC NJ, but so far I like it.

Since no one has objected, I will be shipping the Shrike to Nathan in AZ instead of CT. I will post once the knife is shipped and send the Delivery Confirmation # to Nathan via private e-mail. I'll post a brief review later also. Right now, I have to chop my way through the ice and snow in my driveway. BTW Nathan, you're lucky you're in AZ instead of CT - nasty storm here yesterday.

Hey everyone,

I recieved the knife today. I was so excited top get it open, I cut myself with my new Cricket (spydie bite #2)! First impressions: bigger than I thought, very stout handle, good feel. Very "droppable" -- the most solid wrist-flick I've felt. I'll write more after I've tested it out a little.

Ok, so I've had some time to goof around with it a little more. First off, great blade, nice thickness, seems sturdy but still thin, and very, very sharp out of the box. I don't know how much use it's gotten yet, but it'll easily shave.

The blade, however, seems small given the size of the handle, it almost looks like it is mismatched, as if there were two sizes and this one had the small blade in the large handle.

The handle is very comfortable and gives good control in use, due to it's nice curve and substantial thickness.

Unfortunately I think it's too big for EDC, at least for me. It is a fat knife, so in a back pocket it would be noticable to the carrier, especially when sitting, I generally prefer knives with thinner profiles, especially pocket-clip types. It does have a good clip, although it is placed around the pivot pin, and so almost an inch rides above pocket when clipped. It's also relatively heavy, due to the stainless bolsters.

The thumb stud gives very positive grip, and it is easy to open, although the action is so smooth and fast that it will cause the aforementioned problem of getting ahead of your thumb and cutting you. For that reason I prefer flicking it, which is very easy, and ends with a satisfying CLICK!

While it is a very well-made knife using excellent materials, I think it suffers from poor design. The design is neither very useful for general utility or hunting (to my eye, anyway) nor is it as aggressive as I would like for self-defense purposes.

Anyhow, a statement of the importance of the combination of the best materials AND great design.

OK, it's off...

I mailed the knife yesterday to T. Erdelyi, UPS tracking number: 1Z9199X4120784272. Happy Hunting!
