Al Mar Shrike Passaround

sorry i never got a chance to post my review, but the last two weeks have been finals madness as the end of the quarter is coming up. Anyways on to the knife:

My first impression when i saw the knife was that it was bigger then i thought. It was longer then i though and heavier. Overall the knife is pretty big and heavy, too heavy to clip to your waistband if you are wearing shorts or warmups imo. When i opened the knife for the first time the first thought that crossed my mind was the thumb stud is amazing! This is like the best thumb stud i have ever seem, being a lefty and seeing how the knife is laid out (theres a small cut out on the right side near the thumb stud for easy access but none on the left side) i thought it would be hard to access the thumbstud on the left but to my surprise it's very easy, the thumb stud grabs onto your thumb without being uncomfortable.

My first impression of the blade was that its kind of ugly... but looks like it can really hurt someone, the blade is thin and pointy and the swedge on top looks kind of weird but I keep visualizing someone getting stabbed in the gut with it and it seems like it would hurt like hell.

Since i was really busy during the few days i had the knife i didn't get to test it out much but i did manage to cut through several sheets of cardboard with it and it slices very well, not amazingly well but good enough, i also stacked like 5 sheets of cardboard together and was able to stabbed through them easily. After cutting the cardboard the knife was still shaving sharp (it was shaving sharp when i got it)

i carried the knife for a couple of days and it didn't seem too heavy while i was wearing khakis, but it did take out a lot of room in my pocket and the way the knife clipped to my pocket made access to that pocket a nuisance, the grooves on the top of blade kept scraping my hand when i put it in my pocket and it hurt, most knives scrape against your hand when you put it in your pocket but it doesn't really hurt or anything, but the grooves on the shrike makes it so that you don't want to use the pocket its in....

the fit and finish was as perfect as a production knife could be and the blade was as centered as a production knife could be, the micarta scales are nice and i compared them to my the almite coating on my spyderco lum and the micarta was just a little bit grippier, it felt like very hard rubber, kind of grippy when dry but very slick while wet.

overall the knife is good, just not something that fits my personal tastes

The SHRIKE has landed safely back at New Graham. Thanks to all that participated in this pass-around. I am very impressed with the condition of the knife after it's trip around the U.S. Not a scratch on the blade or handles...edge perfect...the feedback in general has been very positive for the SHRIKE...most negative feedback centered on the size (it is a large folder)...the thumbstuds, grooves on back of blade biting hand when digging in pockets and the smoothness of the micarta scales that may lead to some slipping in a wet environment. I will give this feedback to Gary Fadden of AlMar next week. Again, my thanks to all involved. In my 29 years of retail sales I have come to believe the honesty and integrety of the knife community in general (and BF community specifically) is several notches above the general population. Kudos to all.
Regards, Mike @ New Graham
What about a SERE 2000 next time?

Mike, Thank you for the chance to try out a new knife, a knife which turned me on to Al Mar as a whole. I would say that anyone who has never handled a Sere 2000 and participates, would be forced to go out and buy one right away. It's one of the best production knives EVER, IMO Thanks again

Mike, it's people like you, Tom, and Dave, who give us all a chance to handle knives we might never get the chance to otherwise.

Most of us don't have the disposable income to buy every new blade out there, just to see if we like it or not, writing a short review is a small price to pay,(plus shipping) to find out if I really like a knife enough to drop $100+ to own it.

Thanks again,
T. Erdelyi
