Hi,

I was just wondering about this series by Al Mar which seems quite respectable. RC 57 - 59. Very Light and won't pull your pants down when it's in your pockets. The only reason possibly could be AUS 8A, which doesn't seem well accepted, but really the composition of this steel is not that simple, unlike steel like 1095 or even 12C27. I'm sure AlMar's heat treat is good.

Any comments from forumers.

Thanks.

There was another post awhile ago about the Al Mar Talon series.

I have the two smaller knives of the trio and am very pleased with them. The flat grind cuts very nicely. The AUS8 steel hasn't given me any problems. I have some other knives made of AUS8 and am happy with them.

I have a small Al Mar folder in AUS 8, came out of the box wicked sharp and very nicely finished. All the stuff they have done by Moki that I've handled is excellent quality. If you like the design, I say go for it. I don't imagine there's going to be another version of those models put out in VG10 or something similar, so AUS 8 is it.

Don't know why you think it is not popular. It's been a strong product for many years. They even have two blade styles. AUS8 steel is good. Fit and finish is excellent. I've looked at them over the years, but haven't bought one personally because I have similar knives already. However, if I wanted a slim light package with micarta as opposed to FRN, they'd be my choice.

Ive had an Eagle And a Falcon for over 8 years for an EDC and love em. I lost the Eagle and had to get another so i got the
talon grind. Great fit and finish. I use them hard and theyre still tight. I roughed up the micarta with some coarse sandpaper and get a lot better grip.Of course i found the one i lost so now i have 3. I highly recommend them.

i dont think they are popular now because they are a pretty old design, IIRC.

i have had an ultralite and it was ok though.

I wrote the following on 7/4/2007...

I've had an Al Mar Falcon Talon now for three months and I have to say I really, really love this knife. First of all I think it is beautiful, not in a fancy, showy way, but it has an understated elegance I find incredibly attractive. It weighs so little I've yet to find a situation where it is inconvenient to carry. Heck, I think my car key weighs more than it does. It came scary sharp and while AUS 8 is not the most wear resistant steel, I've found that only a few strokes on a ceramic rod once or twice a week keeps the edge sharp enough to shave with. In fact I've used it a few times when no one was around to shave off some whiskers that I missed during the morning shave. Fit and finish are spot on; when open you can barely see the line where the blade and lock connect. I originally wanted the non-talon, flat grind model but screwed up my order and ended up with the talon saber grind; but after seeing how thin the blade was and how well it sliced through even the most delicate of materials I decided to keep it. It opens effortlessly and ambidextrously with either hand and can be closed safely with one hand if you are somewhat adept with your fingers. The only problem I've ever encountered with it has more to do with my own personal habits. I removed the clip because I didn't like how the knife felt and looked with it on and therefore it sits at the bottom of whatever pocket I carry it in and has on occasion picked up some lint in the locking mechanism which kept it from securely locking into an open position. I use dry graphite as a lubricant for the mechanism, but if anyone has a recommendation for a lubricant that is less likely to attract pocket debris I'm all ears.

Since then I got a Benchmade 530 which has supplanted the role of the Al Mar. I still really like it though.

i've got a few Al Mar's .... 2 Hawks and MiniSere2000.... all excellent quality..... same F&F like my Spyderco MiniPersian, for example...

Which is preferable, the normal or the talon blade.

Also I noticed most of you have the smaller blade i,e. the hawk instead of the eagle. Some have the falcon and hawk.

Thanks

I recently bought the Talon Hawk Ultralight. When I got it, the opening felt a little gritty. I opened and closed it a bunch, and then put a tiny bit of graphite form a pencil on it and now it is smooth as silk.

The knife is light as a feather and plenty big enough. It's advertised as 1 ounce; on my work postal meter it weighs 1.1 ounces.

I am very happy with it. It is an excellent knife for wearing with my suits-my everyday attire. Very slim. Very sharp.

sorry to revive the old thread, it just that I want to order this knife and have it shipped to Canada. The problem is that our customs sometimes like to flick knives first and then decide if they let them through :grumpy:. Theonew said

but in another thread someone else said that he didn't like his eagle was pretty stiff to open. It would be nice to hear from more eagle owners how stiff the opening is.

I had the Falcon. I am a big fan of Al Mar knives but not this one. It had pretty bad steel. If it was VG-10, it would help ALOT. AUS-8 is a joke. Also, the action was pretty stiff. With a blade this light, a stiff action truns it into a two handed knife.

Best knife from Al Mar, the Shrike in micarta. It is a whole lotta knife for about $120

AUS-8 is a joke.
 AUS-8 is a more than adequate steel for general use pocket knives.

Where do people get this crap? I have to wonder if you just read threads here and then decide to condemn anything that doesn't have enough hype for you.

Anybody that actually uses and sharpens an AUS-8 blade for a while will find that it is nothing to be concerned about.

I got my folder yesterday. It's very light and slim. Actually I also wanted to order the Eagle but they didn't have the talon blade in stock. Opening is quite stiff, maybe I should put a drop of oil. There is a loud click when fully opened. It's quite sharp and can slice paper (not as sharp as the Spyderco Endura). Altogether a very nice looking blade which will not pull your pants down. The handle is very smooth and fit and finish are excellent. I'm glad I got the talon blade because it does look much nicer than in the photo. The knife is a lock back and closes very smoothly.

It definitely won't flick open. But with a drop of oil on the pivot it opens smoothly with the thumbstud.
