Al or Ti? How to tell

I stand corrected. The electrical thing is a good idea DaveH, the Archimedean method is good too. Well then if Ti is resistant to things like sodium hydroxide then it is once again a semi viable option.
 
You could try the do-it-yourself anodize method with 9v batteries and coca cola. It only works with TI, and if it does you can always sand/polish the test spot off.
