Up for sale is my personal sword. Crafted painstakingly by me from Australian High Carbon Spring Steel conforming to 1075AISI, heat treated and tempered to perfection by an Industrial Guillotine Maker. This steel is superb. Shape was laser cut by masters in the field who work predominantly for the Australian Mining Industy. You just don't get steel like this coming out of most sword shops.
Sword is the result of more than 11 years of research and knowledge in the field of Byzantine Swords, it's form crafted by myself Bill Blake graduate of University of New England (B.A. European Literature) - the focus of my studies was the Roman Way of War.
Hilt furniture is fashioned from high quality Australian Engineering Brass typically used in the manufacture of electrodes.
Grip is of Tasman Oak, a variety of Eucalypt tree native to Australia - this timber is renowned for its shock absorbency and durability. Grip is held in place with two tonne per square inch Epoxy Resin. This construction is then bound with Kangaroo Leather lacing (not string). This is then bound again in top grain Kangaroo Leather sheet buffed for maximum grip and dyed with the finest quality Artist's Alcohol Dye. Please note that hand dyed leather has a variable finish that ages extremely well; it is not however entirely uniform like factory dyed leather. This is not a fault but rather a mark of a truly hand dyed object. The leather is then treated liberally with mineral oil for mould resistance, Dubbin for suppleness and finally dissolved paraffin wax to seal it. This is then buffed to perfection providing an attractive, natural looking finish and fantastic control.
Guard is cold fitted and then secured by the grip construction and two tonne epoxy to seal the handle free from oxygen. Pommel is cold peened, the traditional way, with a countersunk tang. Prior this the end of the tang is annealed with heat so that the pommel can withstand substantial shock.
Blade is distally tapered in a period correct fashion with appropriate tip reinforcement. This sword swings beautifully with one hand but allows for a hand and a half grip for really powerful blows. Blade is finished to a high satin polish, which can be maintained with an included free Gray Scotch-Brite pad.
You won't find anything on the market like this sword because no one else is producing a historically accurate Byzantine Spathion like it.
I not only run Alae Swords but also Sword-Site: The World's Largest Free Online Sword Museum! So if you'd like to know more about me please look me up through Google, eBay unfortunately does not allow linking to third party sites directly.
I have included photos of the swords that have shaped the design of this sword from both Byzantine Art and the archaeological record.
Statistics:
40 inches length overall
Crossguard 7 inches across
33 inch Blade, 7 inch handle
Blade 8cm at Widest
5.4mm Stock with non-linear distal taper and reinforced tip
POB 7.5 inches from guard
4lbs weight (this is a sword intended for a strong individual but the weight does not tell the whole picture - I'm 5'10 and I can wield it easily)
Parabolic edge geometry (Sharp!)
I was planning to hang onto this sword but as I've relocated recently and won't be producing swords for some time to come, this will be one of the last to go up for sale. I dearly love this sword but provided it goes to a loving home as so many have in the past, then I am willing to part with it.
