In the Roman Empire towards the end of the Classical Period the Eastern Provinces were in an almost continual state of War with Rome's most determined and technologically advanced enemy - the resurgent Persian Empire. As a direct response to the unconventional and extremely successful Persian way of war which utilised both cavalry archers and super heavy shock cavalry - the Clibinarii, also known as Kataphracts came to be imitated quite successfully by the Romans.
The Clibinarii would have had a tremendous shock value, but unlike later heavy mounted units such as knights, Clibinarii and Kataphracts did not rely in the majority on the strength of their charge, but owing to their superlative armour were able to fight in a more sustained way. Other than Elephants there really were no heavier troop types than these. Their weapons reflected this - a mace, a heavy lance and always at the ready a sword capable of sufficiently damaging the armour of equally heavily armoured men.
This sword sports both a broader and more heavily reinforced edge than the typical Spatha of lighter cavalry and infantry because it belonged to the elite ultra heavy shock units of antiquity. As with all my swords, this is a one off, and the design will never be repeated.
