Alaskan doctor survives bear mauling

Satellite phones are the answer. It sounds like he did right. Tried to get a shot off. Kept his stomach low and hands covering his neck. Even though he wasn't hunting he still travelled with some sort of protection even though he was close to the cabin.

"He [the doctor] grabbed the 6 mm rifle out of the water, jammed another cartridge into it and watched the woods."

Stryker D, a 6mm rifle (equivalent to a .243 Win.) ain't hardly what I would call much "protection" in Griz country. And it is almost worthless slung over one's shoulder.

Whether just hiking or if I am elk/deer hunting in Griz country -- and there are some Griz here in Idaho -- I am carrying a .338 Win. Magnum, and it is in my hand, not slung on my shoulder.

That's just me, of course, and I suppose some might think me paranoic :) ... but if something were to happen, I'd have a far better chance solving the problem than the doctor had.

Glad the "doc" will survive. Wonder if he'll be a bit more prepared, next time he walks in Griz country?

I bet he'll never watch that movie that came out recently the same again, "30 Days of Night." The one with the vampires attacking that small alaskin town. Glad he made it out in one piece.

Damn, that must have hurt like a sumbuck.... hell of a thing.

Hey buffalohump, just saw a show on discovery channel here called "fierce planet," it talked about Africa! Well, sort of, mostly about the sahara desert and how it was formed. It mentioned how it used to be a paradise with rivers flowing all through it, until the earth rotated 1 degree and then the SHTF. On top of all of that, a meteor hit and caused a lot of rock and sand to form. So, that is why the top half of Africa is all sand, but it IS the Best sand in the world too. :)

Good point. Thanks for the advice Leanwolf.

I use to live in SE Alaska. I would see griz swimming between the islands all the time.

A rifle makes a pretty poor defensive weapon! With all the big, powerfull revolvers out there today, got to wonder why he wasn't carrying one???

If I were in an area where I was sure to encounter griz, a combat shotgun loaded with one round of buchshot in the chamber and slugs in the magazine, backed up with a Ruger Alaskan would be my choice.
