Alaskan Fish Story

Man I haven't been fishing for at least 12 years! I can't wait until my boy is a little bit bigger. He's good and smart now, but still doesn't quite follow directions all the time and I sure don't want to have to dig a hook out of either of us just yet.
----------
My girl friend's son is 5 1/2 and last two summers he was Ok with bait fishing with a bobber. Then all of a sudden he thought casting was really cool and I showed him how to cast a spinning rod. He did well, so I bet that next year he could use spinners and things like that. He's a few years from a fly rod though. So PG I have no idea how old your son is but this kid was OK at about 4 1/2. But if you are not cathcing fish you have a big problem on your hands and you'll need a batch of toys to keep him busy.

You mentioned taking hooks out of yourselves, that happened to me once and it was on that trip the photo is from, I had a fish spit a hook when it jumped about 25 feet from the boat; the fly came right back at me (it was weighted so it flew well) and ended up hanging from the right side of my face like an ear ring. I was releasing everything that day so I had the barb down on the hook and it came right out. The area was numb from the impact so I didn't feel a thing and I was back in the water in less than 15 minutes.

Now going to Alaska and taking over a Salmon sport fishing camp with a bunch of guys here would be some big fun. I did that with 11 other guys and it was a blast becuse you were with friends all the time you were off the river. That and a dart board really helped pass the time.

I posted a thread about a Hog Bash up here in 2008 and no one even posted the slightest interest.  I can only think of 2-3 guys that I chat with outside the forum that said they'd be game. I'm was thinking Mid-July.

Glad to hear you crimped the barb. The Kenai Pennisula Hospital ER has a manakin (sp?) that the staff uses to put the remove hooks from onto. Most of them are on the face as they put them in relation to where it was removed from. Last year was around 240 IIRC

Nate will be 3 in Nov. so Maybe next year I will think of trying it out just with a bobber. We'll see, like you said, if there aren't any fish coming in he is going to need something to occupy him. I used to take a book to read. Drove my dad nuts.

In my case I wasn't going to any ER. I was a 45-50 minutes by plane from Dillingham AK, which is already in the middle of no where.

I'd usually be game for an AK trip but it depends on what is happinging at the time in my business life. So to plan much in advance of three months is hard to do.

Also July would be Kings (right?) and although they are monsters up there (like on the better King rivers 60 lbs is very common and the AK record is something like 95 or 103 lbs) I don't think they are as much fun to catch as silvers. Also you can time silvers so that the first freeze has happened and the bugs are nearly gone.

The good thing about kings is that they have better meat than Silvers. But then I can walk over and get on a boat here in San Francisco and go king fishing most of the year.

I just spent half of last Saturday at a stocked pond fishing with my 11 yo son for sunfish, bass (12"-17"), and catfish. The youngest kids there were about 4 yo. If you take your son to a place that is small and stocked, you will probably get some good action, which is what I think kids that age need to start the fire burning. For the times when they are not biting, it helps to teach them a little patience too. It is certainly better than starting him out in a boat from dawn to dusk without so much as a nibble. We all know how those days go!!!

Mid July is the peak king run, peak first run of reds (put up a great fight, not as aerial as silvers, but I enjoy them more so. I've caught and released 50-100 reds on one or two days in mid July) and peak halibut fishing. The weather is nice out and would be great for bear viewing on the Russian or Kenai. That is why I figured on July. Plus it would be after blade show and before blade west.

John... I went fishing a couple times with a buddy of mine. He brought his 4yo and he got bored quickly. Wanted to go home till we hooked up a rainbow and let him reel it in. He power housed it in :D and then wanted to catch 3 more. We just had to find where the fish were biting and hand it off to him.

That is crazy! Mat-su valley huh? I live in Wasilla and work part time at 3 Rivers Fly and Tackle - ask for Brett

I just got back from a fly-in to Iliamna for big trout. Nasty-bad weather...lots of bears! We came back early to hit the Kenai! Think Trout!

I did Iliamna in 2004 with Royal Wolf. The trout there could be as big as Silvers!!! I got three like that in the week I was there. BUT they just were not as fun, they seemed slugish:( :(. I have seen more energy out of a 15 inch fish in California.

My oldest daughter was successfuly fly fishing at age 9 for hand sized sun perch and rainbow trout. Was priceless watching her when one grabbed a fly. Talk about animated...

I want to go to Russia for trout. I understand they take mice off the top of the water ALL SEASON. But they are not big fish by Alaska standards, maybe 24 inches tops, but there are a ton of ’em. Seeing them cruise in on a mouse pattern, when I'm on the other end of a 5wt rod, would make me animated if were 90!
