I met Aldo Bruno at Ashokan over the weekend. We talked as much about God, the universe, and family as we did steel. I had a large quantity of highly figured/ spalted and ambrosia hard maple with me, and I know he does wood as well. By the time we got around to horsetrading, he was all out of Nitro V that he brought with him, so we decided I would stop by his shop on my way home, as it was only a 10 minute detour. Maybe this is common knowledge, but I didn't know how big Aldo is into knife making as well. His shop is impressive. 2 surface grinders, at least 3 2x72s, a big 3 x 132, multiple large buffers, several wood band saws, presses, a mill, CNC router, etc. This was just his knife making stuff. I, working in my little 10 x 13 shop am already impressed. Then we go to the other building. Yes, the portal to Valhalla that is his steel warehouse. To say I was aroused at the sight of every steel I've ever heard of (and several I hadn't) stacked to the ceiling, would be a gross understatement. If you've ever gone to a welding supply house, with the back warehouse full of all manner of steel: imagine that, but all the steel is for knife making. Sheets upon sheets, sticks cut to width, 2 enormous saws. Truly impressive. I know Aldo was tired from the weekend (he had to be, I was beat, and he was up before me), yet he took the time to talk knives, design, techniques, etc. He is truly in love with the craft of knife making as much as anyone I've seen. He's a good man, who loves his family, and his craft. He's also a businessman that understands taking care of customers is the key to long term business success. Thanks for taking the time Aldo. Yeah, I guess I'm an Aldo fan boy now.
Oh, and let's just say he got that Maple for a "Steel". (Nitro V to be exact
