I`m quite sure Aldo is a nice , upright kind of guy , so I`m not asking any such thing as what kinda guy is he . What I would like to know is , for those of you who have used it , what do you think of his 1/8 inch hr 1095 ? Just wanting to find a place [ other than Admiral ] to buy some carbon steel thats affordable . I just buy small amounts [ 10 - 12 ft ] at a time . How`s his shipping ?
Thanks guys for any replys

I just ordered a 1/8x2x48 piece from him today and it came out to 30.20. Shipping was almost half of that but he said that if I had gotten another piece shipping only goes up a dollar or two. I think it does not matter who you order from shipping is going to be killer on small orders.

Understanding that you don't want to know what stand-up and fantastic guy Aldo is, and how he takes better care of us bladesmiths than Admiral could ever care to try to do, I'll try to stick to the actual question ;)

There is not a guy in th ebusiness who cares more about the quality of the steel they sell than Aldo. His new stuff that's coming in is guaranteed top-notch steel from a mill in Germany (and you know the Germans always make great stuff! :D). If you ask him for the specific batch chemistry, he's got it, and you can decide for yourself if it will meet your needs. If you're not yet to the point of understanding how tiny changes in chemistry will affect your end product, don't worry. Nobody loses more sleep over making sure that the steel you get is the right stuff more than Aldo does.

It will be steel of very high quality. No ifs, ands, or buts. As far as price goes, Aldo will be competitive, or he'll be honest with you about why he can't be. IMNSHO, we need to support the guys who are trying specifically to help us knifemakers out before anybody else. Aldo has taken a great leap of faith and turned his whole life upside down to work long hours, moving tons of heavy stuff and driving all over the country to do it because of his love for the craft of knifemaking and his desire to make sure that we get the best possible materials to work with. He's no corporate stooge or sales jockey behind a desk trying to make quota. He's doing this to support us, so I say let's all support him as a show of thanks for his hard work and order from him no matter how big or small the order.

When I met Aldo he was a plumber making knives on the side as a hobby. He got an opportunity to buy a batch of amazing steel and got it and sold it to a bunch of us. Once that sold a bunch of us kept asking him when he was going to get more since it was such excellent steel. He got a small batch melted to be pretty much identical chemistry, and that sold out quickly. He started trying to find or have made whatever steel knifemakers were in need of. Last I knew he quit the day job and is now dedicated to supplying superior steel for knifesmiths

Deker said all of what I didn't want to type out last night! Aldo IS the man and his steel is the best! He may not be a corporate stooge...., but he does kinda look like the love child of the three stooges. If you become friends with Aldo you will have a true blue friend for life!
He has the best steel in the industry!

It`s not that I don`t care or want to know about what kind of guy Aldo is , as he has been around for a good while and while I don`t know him personally , I have always heard good things about him , so I knew he was one of the good guys . I was just trying to limit the scope of the question and maybe get more short , quick answers about his steel , which I did not know about . I too think we should try to support members who are trying to help out all knifemakers instead of a big steel company who doesn`t care about us as a individual , which is why I asked the question in the first place .
I apologize to you and to Aldo if I in any way made it sound like he or what he does for us as a group does not matter .

No harm, no foul.
We just like to talk about how nice a guy Aldo is.:D
If you have a specific steel need...just call Al and tell him...he will do his best to locate what you want.

I first bought Aldo's 1084 on reputation of the steel alone. I knew very little about the man. At Blade 2010 I had the chance to meet the Baron behind the steel. I sat and talked to him a few times over the weekend and listened in on a few conversations around the table.... as long as the NJ Steel Baron is still in business I will ONLY buy from Aldo. It just doesn't get any better.

I hear he is coming out with a batch of Ch1Na steel that has a bit more nutmeg than the last.

Just for reference, I just bought 5 sticks of 1" x 1/4" x 48" 1084FG from Aldo. Total cost was $103, $21 of that was UPS Ground shipping.

UPS wasn't tracking my order - as of yesterday showing that he'd printed a label on the 12th, but they didn't yet have the package. I called him yesterday to see what's up, and 20 feet of 1084 was on my porch in Texas this morning. What really impressed me was that if it turned out to be his mistake, he was going to send the order 2-day premium, no charge to me.

I got to meet Mr. Bruno in New York last month, at Ashokan. When I saw him dance around an anvil with a hammer in one hand and a stick of hot steel in the other, that's all I needed to know. The man loves what he does, and he loves what we do - and he does - with his product. :p

I don't really care how much he charges. As long as he has or can get what I need, I'm not shopping anywhere else.

Though I have not purchased the size you stated in the OP his shipping costs are less than 1/2 of most of the other steel suppliers. I have used his .25 x 1.5 1084 and his .375 x 1.625 1095. Both performed as advertised. When you order steel from Aldo you get what you order. Also the base prices of the material is VERY competitive, I compared most of the big steel co's and their prices were usually higher, the best they could do was match them. So like others have said, Adlo is one of 2 steel suppliers I now deal with. Kelly Couples is the other.

I have to go with everyone else on this one. My steel comes from Aldo and I could not ask for a better person to deal with. Great steel, good prices, and exceptional service. To answer the question Idoyle, I would fully expect Aldo's 1/8" 1095 to be a very good steel and if there is a problem all you have to do is contact Aldo and he will make it right.

What does pickled mean? I am very new to this and am ready to buy good steel for the first time.
Is the FG already annealed ?
