Hi Guys and Gals,

I'm thinking about ordering some of Aldo Bruno's round Bar stock in 5160. I've never forged a blade from round bar before though. Id like to make practice blades for my J.S. Performance test and eventually the actual blade I'll be testing with from this steel.

What diameter should I get? He has:

1"

.825"

.750"

I would be ording his flat bar 5160 in 1 1/2" but he is out of inventory on that size. What size blade can be made from the aforementioned diameters?

Thanks for any thoughts

Bobby

Forging by hand...?

I'd suggest the 1" as it would allow more width freedom.

I've bought 3/4" round 5160 from Ray Kirk in the past. It's surprising how much that will spread. Of course, I was using a 100lb ram power hammer with fullering dies. By hand, probably won't spread quite as wide as it will tend to move in all directions more equally.

Didn't know Aldo carried 5160 round. Interesting.

Might consider bumping up to a 2" flat bar rather than round if you're forging by hand. I'm suspicious it might be easier.

You might want to give him a call to see what he has in stock. his website has been know to be out of date at times. If you are going to hammer round to flat there is going to be a lot of heating and beating in your future. Have fun!!

I emailed Also last week Barry. He asked me how much of the 1 1/2" I was interested in ordering. I said about 3 sections of 48". I'm still gonna order the flat bar when it comes in, but I'd like to try my hand at some round bar too.
