I just received some of Aldo's w2 and 1095 and a 5 lb. Bag of satanite from hightemptools. I'm wanting to try a hamon.
It seems parks 50 is unavailable.
Is preheated canola oil preferred over water or brine?
Thanks for any help

Josh, sure you know but you're going to lose some blades in a water or brine quench. Much depends on your process but heartache and lost time is almost guaranteed now and then. For Parks 50, call Carla or Lee Neves at Maxim Oil in Ft Worth (817-293-4645). Great folks that know what they're talking about and have been supplying P50 to makers for years.

Cool thanks for the number! I would hate to lose blades like that. I had read about blades cracking and wasn't sure if it was specific to forged blades so good to know.

Carla is extremely helpful, I had 5 gallons shipped to MT and it was here very quick, seems to me it was only a few days. Ran about one-forty shipped.

If you can't get the fast oil, do an interrupted quench, 3 seconds in brine, then finish in heated canola. You'll prevent most broken blades this way.

Thanks for the reply Warren, I saw a video of someone doing that and it worked!

I'd give them a call, I don't imagine Kentucky would be much different shipping (40ish$) but you never know. I think their minimum is 5 gallons though.

Ive adopted this mentality. Only thing is as ive been gathering tools this past year or so is it's alot of crying lol.

Having been there myself, I can assure you the fast oil will leave you wondering how you did without it once you have it.

Sweet, just ordered some parks from Maxim Oil.
Carla was great to deal with (as you guys said).
They're out of it right now, but have more coming in a few days in case anyone else is thinking about ordering some.
Can't wait to try it!
