For sale - Alferd's Bowie

Alfred G. "Alferd" Packer (January 21, 1842 – April 23, 1907) was an American prospector who was accused of cannibalism in Colorado.
First tried for murder, Packer was eventually sentenced to 40 years in prison after being convicted of manslaughter. In November, 1873, Packer was with a party of 21 who left Provo, Utah, bound for the Colorado gold country around Breckenridge, Colorado. The party got hopelessly lost, ran out of provisions, and became snowbound in the Rocky Mountains. Packer allegedly went scouting and came back to discover Bell roasting human flesh. According to Packer, Bell rushed him with a hatchet. Packer shot and killed him. Packer insisted that Bell had gone mad and murdered the others. On April 16, 1874, Packer arrived alone at Los Pinos Indian Agency near Gunnison. He spent some time in a Saguache, Colorado saloon, meeting several of his previous party. He initially claimed self-defense, but his story was not believed.

This is a chopper!

Full Sambar Stag scales almost 1/2" thick at the rear. Mosaic pins and comes with a lanyard from Alexander's Outdoors.

BFAlfredsheath-1.jpg

Includes a hand sewn Spanish Loop sheath-fully hand tooled. I made this as a "lefty" since so many guys wear their firearms on the right.

"If I'd a had it, I'd a used it!!!"

I'm letting it go for only $375 as I need to make room for new pieces - it would normally be higher just due to the complexity and time involved in making the sheath; plus $15 shipping to the continental U.S. (Note: the only reason my shipping varies is the cost of insurance)

I welcome International Sales - Overseas buyers pay actual freight and only Paypal is accepted for out of the U.S. purchases.

paypal@jarrettknives.com or personal check (inquire for details)

I appreciate you taking a look at my knives. Please check out my web site as well.

Wayne this is the most beautiful, most impressive, knife you have posted here. the price is an absolute steal (steal this steel).
was the guy's name really Alferd and not Alfred ?
r. alfred procter

ahhh, please excuse my ignorance, but: "machine finished blade and brass bolsters." meaning polished on a buffing wheel rather than by hand ?
and, if so, does it make any difference to the knife ?

Thanks Roland.

It was written in the history books both ways. From what we learned in school about him the pronunciation of the day was probably "Alferd".

When I say machine finished I mean it's polished out and then I run it on a 600 grit Scotch-Brite belt leaving a beautiful uniform satin finish.

Now that's a nice one. I love everything about this one, don't expect it to be around long if your riding the fence, because all you'll wind up with is a sore crotch.
Good work Wayne, man you raised the bar on this one from high jump to pole vault.

Thanks Joe. :)

During my days of working on the ranch, "ridin' fence" had a whole different meaning but come to think of it, you still ended up with a sore crotch! ;)

You know I'm related to him on my mother's side of the family. Great uncle or something like that. No joke.

SOLD - Headed to a new home in NSW, Australia Thanks Urs!

Shotgun - that's pretty cool. I guess you have to be a native Coloradoan to see why, but.... Alferd's a legand 'round these parts.

Andy - Thanks my brother. I forgot you did time in Durango. Next time you're out this way - I need to have you for lunch...errr....over for lunch. LOL

Timbo - Thank you sir. BTW - I'm very curious as to how you are going to get a bowie past customs in the UK? I just sent a small Bird and Trout to Hampshire and had to jump through hoops. If you have a secret incantation that turns a big knife into a door knob and back again I need to know it. :D

Thanks guys. I don't make too many knives on the larger side but this may get my juices flowing in that direction if people want them.

Rick - Not too many people believe that fact about CU. Thanks for the link.

Wayne,
Any knives I send overseas I just put custom hand tool on the customs form. Never had a problem.

Hey Andy,

I'm with you on that one, also eating utensil, hobby goods, etc. For the most part, I never have issues with anywhere except England. I'm sure you're aware of their strict knife ordinances. We have two set of friends in London and the surrounding area that try to keep me up on any changes but most of the time they're baffled as well. If you're over 18 you can buy a butcher knife at Marks & Spencer but they worry about 3.5" blades. Bollocks! :D

Wow. Great design. Love the fat belly. Hope you can post some more pics once you get it nightowl. Jarrett, put me on your mailing list next time you make one of these.

holeymoley -

The list is building and you're on it.

  • Side note: I have to admit that it's the first time I've ever actually appreciated a comment from another man on my "fat belly". ;) And these days, the belly is all that's completely paid for. :D
Now back to talking about the bowie....with all the PM's and emails I've been getting regarding this model I will be ordering in some more 19C27 Sandvik in the width I need to make up this beast. I love working with this stainless and wish I had more call for the larger blades (like this one) that deserve it.

-I can either duplicate the knife in premium Sambar Stag grips like on the original or we can discuss other handle and bolster materials of your liking.

-We can also discuss sheath options as this piece looks and works great with Kydex and the more conventional "fold over" leather sheaths. FYI - I do all my sheaths and Kydex in house.

So if anyone else wants on "the list" now is the time to speak up as I'll need time to fits these builds into my schedule and show season is upon us.
