With Cowboys vs Aliens coming out Friday, I've been amped up in regards to alien movies. Movies like Skyline and Monsters were disappointments, to say the least. I don't have cable, but I caught bits and pieces of the new series Falling Skies while on vacation, and really liked it. A little bit different, but the tv show Space Above and Beyond, and the movie Starship Troopers, both about humans just trying to survive, are set in space, but I guess sort of the same type of movie.

Are there any other alien invasion movies or tv series out there that I should check out? The original War of the Worlds movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, so did the tv series in the 80's. After buying the series on DVD, it was laughable. Same for the Tom Cruise remake. I enjoyed the original V miniseries, only seen a couple episodes of the new series.

Really looking for the "alien invasion causes apocalypse on Earth" type shows and movies.

Too much of a good thing? I watched the 1st and part of the 2nd episode of Falling Skies and I quit. It's just like every other aliens attack earth movie with the same cliches. My wife watches it.

"I believe that there is intelligent life in the universe. The proof is that they have not tried to contact us."

I tried to watch some of Falling Skies, but it was slow, formulaic and lacked any interesting special effects, not interest in watching it further.

Just watched Battle LA on BlueRay. It was a good war/buddy picture rather than a SciFi movie.

Twilight Zone Episode 89, "To Serve Man" (2 March 1962) is a classic. Watch it before you read the spoilers.

If you like Edward James Olmos and Vancouver, the remake Battlestar Galactica was great. It isn't exactly what you're asking for, but it had terrifying alien invaders.

Based on what I have read I am pessimistic about it. A relatively unknown director and cast. Who knows it could be a pleasant surprise.

John Carpenters the Thing had an unknown cast. Kurt Russell had been in a few movies, and I think Wilford Brimley was a known character actor at the time (before he did oatmeal, diabetic supplies and insurance commercials). The trailer I saw looks a little goofy, but I am hopeful for it. I want to see how the movie ties in with the beginning of The Thing, with the Norwegians chasing the dog-thing. Hopefully, they will keep with 80's technology (the chess program, Blairs "super" computer).

killer klowns from outer space <<< nugh said.

I have been watching falling skies and it is actually really good. Its more about how the people attempt to adapt and overcome and really does touch on the more realistic side of "what if". Sit down and watch it and you'll understand.

Oh, and "Mars Attacks" shouldn't be overlooked. Great send-up of 50s/60s B movies.

Battle LA was Independence Day with big boy pants on...

District 9 was ok...Falling Skies is teaching TNT why passing on The Walking Dead was a stupid move, terrible acting, terrible writing, really terrible effects in Falling Skies.

I am the biggest "Who goes there?" fan in the world, Hawks original campy Thing and JC's darker take were top flight. The prequel needs to be out of this world awesome to even be relevant after JC The Thing.

If you are looking for something different try Heinlen's "The Puppet Masters" which was pretty cool and really underrated...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Puppet_Masters

Picked up Heinleins Puppet Masters over the weekend. Great book. I'm guessing that Donald Sutherlands adaptation of the book wasn't a great movie :D.

"Good" invasion movies are hard to come by. Battlestar Galactica (the new one) was not really an "invasion" idea; the Cylons were out to obliterate humanity. But...One of the best sci-fi series ever to appear on TV.
Most are mindless... Scary aliens with no apparent purpose out to destroy us.

If we look to fiction... "Footfall" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle was one of the better ones I recall.

I might be showing my age here a bit but one of my favs growing up was a tv series called UFO for its time it was scary and had darn good fx
