hey all spydie heads, help me with this knife. i have searched the forums and catalogs and i have not seen this knife. it is an all black police model, spyder edge, g-2 steel. the handles are also what appears to be black ti coated steel. the box says co7sbk. i have seen black ti coated blades but not a black ti coated steel handle on a sypderco. is this the "titanium handle" model described in the earlier ats-55 thread? thanks...dmc

The knife is about 5 years old. It's basically a standard Police Model with a black titanium-carbo-nitride coating on it. My best buddy has one, which he's used as his regular work knife about that long. The finish on his has worn exceptionally well, but I've heard that the ones made for the SEALs had problems with the finish peeling. There was a rumor going around that that was why they were d/c'd. Blackstone reintroduced them a few years back. I don't know if they bought them that way or if the were standard models finished by someone else. Sal? Am I close? I think I am, but it's been a log time. How many are there (that Spyderco made)?

I have one that is all black and has been engraved with the Magnum Research Logo and is serial numbered. What is the story Sal??

I currently know of 2 places that usually have the black coated Police Models. These outlets are having the knives coated independantly of Spyderco, as we do not have them done anymore. Both places are having the coatings put on by the same place that did them for us years ago.
Contact: Ironstone - 800/828-1925
H.L. Dalis - 718/361-1100
(this is one of our distributors, so
call and ask where you can buy one
from one of their dealers)
I hope this helps.
Take care,
Rafael

A quick update: Ironstone does not carry
the Black-Ti Police model any longer, and will not carry it again. We contacted them last week for a customer, and they said "We got too many complaints about the coating screwing up the edge..." I have no idea of the validity of that, just quoting...I also talked to HL Dalis at that time, and could not get a straight answer either way.....

just my two copper lincoln heads...

Greetings dmc,

Our friends from PV Knife have that same model on auction at the following web page:

Check it out!

Take care,
Tom

Hey guys! Just a quick update here on the black coated knives. I stand corrected on the Ironstone thing, last I had checked, they still had some. However, I know for a fact that H.L. Dalis in NY will coat the Police Model for your dealer if they don't have any in stock at the moment. Also, they will black-ti coat any all stainless handled knife. Examples: Delica II, Endura II, Co-Pilot, Pegasus, Worker, etc. Just have your dealer call them at 718/361-1100, and they may have to ask for John Blumenfeld. Trust me on this, I handle all of the distributors for Spyderco and know what most of them have going on.
I hope that your dealers are successful in getting you these knives if you need them.
By the way, in order to get the edge on a coated knife to work properly, just make a few passes on the Sharpmaker and you'll be fine.
Regards,
Rafael

Greetings Rafael. Any idea what the cost would be for the black TI coating and do they offer this service for fixed blades? Thanks.

Nakano,
I'm not sure what they are charging for the coated models as I have not seen their 1999 price list yet. If you are a dealer, just give them a call, if not have your local knife shop ring them.
Take care,
Rafael

I remember when Ironstone was selling those black coated police models for $69.95. That was a good deal, but they went fast.

As far as I know, Spyderco used to produce Worker C01 ti coated model as well. It was produced and discontinued almost same time as Police C07 was. Police has many variations such as:
-G2 Stainless blade w/Alminium handle, "Police Model" stamp on blade
-G2 Stainless blade w/"tuffrum" coated alminium handle
-ATS34 blade w/Titanium handle(half serrated was available)
-All black Ti coated with SEALs trident engraving on handle(Anybody know background of this?)
-Gin-1(described as G2 before) blade with G10 handle

Just to add tribial information, Co-pilot and worker used to have tuffrum handles before.

The Black Ti coated "Seals" Police models were made for a distributor in California that was doing something with the Seals down there. There were a few companies that ordered quantities of engraved Coated Police models at various times over the years. None were very large quantities (50 - 200). Most are pretty rare at this time.

Spyderco coated stainless models, especially the Police for many years starting ten or more years ago. Customer complaints over the coatings not doing what they expected or had hoped for was the one of the reasons for discontinueing. Also learned that the heats required to apply many of the coatings can alter the heat treat of most steels.

Dear Sal,

I am so excited to have your responce to my comment above as well as fulfill my knowledge about Coated "Seals" Police. Thanks to dmc to let me have an opportunity to talk to "Spydies".

For anybody who will have a chance to travel to Japan, I've seen few of Black coated "Seals" police at "Tokyu Hands"Yokohama branch.
