All the knife I need.

I recently bought my girlfriend a little Vic Classic SD as she wanted a tiny knife she could carry around for simple tasks, and I couldn't resist getting one myself. It has been on my keychain now for almost a week and I find myself wondering how I used to cope without it. I have other SAK's and while the blade on this one is pretty flimsy, it gets pretty most every urban job I throw at it done with ease. My Douk-douk takes nicely care of the bigger stuff, but in reality, for urban use, I can't see why I wouldn't be perfectly fine with the little classic as my only EDC. My only criticism would be that allowing the blade to snap shut seems has created a slight flat spot on the edge; an action I prefer my knives to be able to handle.

Really neat little thing. Do you guys share this view?

Agreed, those mini SAKs are a vital part of my EDC. I have custom modded manager with brass scales, having this means I don't have to carry a larger SAK for the scissor and caplifter, which frees up the pocket for a plain traditional knife.

I carry one of these also .But I mainly use it for the toothpick and scissors. MY main knife is a benchmade . I use a sequel when I go to Church .I have to put the bulletins out and then break down the empty cardboard box which I wouldn't want to do that with a tiny knife like the classic. Even the scissors are pretty flimsy . I use those for trimming my moustache and cutting coupons but it's not easy . I've been thinking about carrying a larger swak for that reason. The main reason I carry a second knife is to keep the sheople off of my butt .but it is so small that sometimes I still need to whip out my osbourne at the walmart to cut a tomatoe vine.or pry open a soda can when the pop top breaks off prematurely.

Shhhhhhhhhh.

I have to echo that. Be veeeery careful here, you're starting to venture into the realm of need vs want. And after all, if you're here, that means you are one of us; the afflicted, the cursed, the obsessed. Knife nuts. Yes, for an urban/suburban dweller the little classic is like the peanut; it's the little knife that can. But since we are the cutlery obsessed, it would never do to shorten our search for the "one" true knife that will serve us. There is no such thing since we're like the knight in Poe's poem "Eldorado".

Yes, we can get by with a classic. But then what would the knife companies do with all those new knves that they need to sell. As knife nuts, we're duty bound to keep stimulating the economy by buying new knives. My God man, think of all the steel workers and assemblers and dealers that would be in the soup lines but for us.
:D

In truth, I've watched my better half, Karen, get by doing the sometimes impossible with her little SAK. And to a great degree it has influenced me. I would never had given the tiniest SAK a fair chance if not for seeing Karen torture the little thing and it never failing. Like my dad using the peanut all those years. And Colin Fletcher got by on some very long backpack trips with just a little SAK for his knife.

But don't tell anyone. It could have dire consequences for the knife industry.

Carl - thanks for this great post. I made not smile, even laugh. Great written up! :)

@notthatsharp: The Classic is a great little knife, for sure. And it does it´s duty very well. So propably it would be a (when not even THE) knife for everyone. So it´s great you found a nice and small EDC for real carry every day. I´m having one on my keys, too. But I don´t really realize it as a knife - it´s just hanging there and gets used when I just don´t have another knife by the hand. But, as almost said, it´s great you found a great knife that fits most of your needs. Absolutelly nothing negative on the Classic.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that nice little fellow.

Hehe, I suspected it would hit a bit of a nerve :D But while you might not need more, one way to look at it is that it frees up space in your pocket for whatever you want, as your need is for the most part covered :) and as you say Carl, the punishment these little fellas can take is impressive!

Ok. I've got a big ole fob on my key ring. One of these would be smaller and more useful. Looks like I need another knife. The toothpick and tweezers actually would be handy on a daily basis.

Bantam?

I find that I could probably survive most of what my life throws at me with my Vic mini champ.

Other than replacing the scissors spring due to wearing it out, it has held up very well.

Boy the thousands of dollars I could have saved if not for this OCD.

No matter what else I have with me, I have a Vic Classic on my key ring. I use it for all sorts of small jobs, but not for cutting.

I used to carry the same little guy For EDC. I agree it can handle most tasks, but it is better for me to carry around a larger blade since I rely on one for defense when I can't carry a firearm.

Yep, right useful little tools. My approach is nearly identical to Frank's.

My keyring companions: red Classic on the van ring, translucent green Signatue Lite on the car ring.

My wife is on a retreat this weekend, but here is an older picture of the translucent blue Classic on her keyring, along with an old and worn green Classic I keep on another ring with office keys.

Thanks for sharing some pictures Doug! It's cool to see how the scales look like after (what looks like) years of pocket and key abuse. Particularly like the green one.

I have a few of them, used to carry one on my keyring for a while, until the TSA decided they needed it. Only things I really ever really used were the tweezers, toothpick, and sometimes the scissors. I always have a "real" knife with me that takes all the cutting tasks. That little thin blade gives me visions of it snapping and me ending up gouged.

I put together an Altoids kit that has urban "day-to-day" stuff in it. I ended up putting my Classic SAK in it, and it seems that I don't use the SAK as much as when I would carry it in the same pocket as my Para 2. I used to use the SAK daily, but now that I have a 3 & 1/4" Stockman around, and the fact that the SAK is somewhat put away, I still ended up carrying it because of the tweezers/sissors here in the desert.

Yeah, I've had that green one a long time. The translucent blue Classic is a recent replacement for my wife. Here is the tweezer/toothpick end of her previous one (similar vintage to my green).

The Classic is a great knife. I carry a translucent blue one in the Vic pleather keychain pouch. The knife itself is between 6 and 8 years old, and the pouch about 3. And it's one of my favorites because it serves as a sharp edge, a scraper, phillips driver, mini flat driver (the tweezers), fiddly bit, and so on. I do wish the keyring was on the opposite end, but you can't have it all.
