All time favorite movie

Unfair to ask for a single one, and everybody else lists many :)

In that spirit, any Tarantino works for me. From Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, from Dusk 'til Dawn, the Grindhouse double feature, etc., to the last ones that I can't stop watching ....

FWIW, from Dusk Till Dawn was directed by Robert Rodriguez. So was Planet Terror of the "Grindhouse Double Feature."

This is hard to answer, if we’re allowed to name only one movie. I like many genres. So I’ll cheat and mention my favorites from each genre I like:

Western: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (1966).

Crime/gangster: Goodfellas (1990).

Animated/anime: Your Name (Kimi no Na wa, 2016).

Martial arts: Shaolin Martial Arts (1974).

Sci-fi: Aliens (1986).

Horror: Suspiria (1977).

Comedy: Top Secret (1984).

Edit to add:

Musical: Saturday Night Fever (1977).

Jim
I watch a lot of movies and have a huge DVD/VHS library. I still keep VHS tapes because there are still alot of older movies that have not been converted to DVD.

I added a few extra categories to make the total 10.

I could list 10 films in each category that I like most BUT (at least for today) these are the ones that I consider my "favorites":

Western: Magnificent 7 (1960)
Crime/Gangster: Godfather I (1972)
Animated: Up! (2009)
Martial Arts: Game of Death (1973)
Sci-Fi: Alien (1979)
Horror: HellRaiser I (1987)
Comedy: Some Like It Hot! (1959)
Musical: Singing In The Rain (1952)
War/Combat: Bridge Over The River Kwai (1957)
Romance: When Harry Met Sally (1989)

I'd be hard pressed to name just one of these 10 films as my favorite overall BUT, if forced to choose one right now, my pick would be . . .

"Singing In The Rain"

Great list!

Yeah, I love many great movies from each of the categories on my list, and in some categories narrowing down to one favorite was very difficult.

If my list had a war movie category, it would be either:

Eastern Condors (1987)

or

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Jim

My favorite war film is Where Eagles Dare with Burton and Eastwood in the lead roles. Unlike Patton, A Bridge Too Far, or The Longest Day it is fiction so you are not distracted by the historical narrative.

n2s

Any of the 5 Dirty Harry movies
High Noon with Gary Cooper
Sons of Katie Elder
War of the Worlds, 1953
The Day the Earth Stood Still with Michael Rennie
In the Heat of the Night, one of Poitiers best performances
Any of the early monster movies, including Japanese kaiju
Any of the early American scare films such as Dracula, Frankenstein and Hunchback of Notre Dame
Then there is the Bond series....preferably Sean Connery....

If I add a classic monster movie category, my favorite would be:

Gojira (original Japanese version of Godzilla, 1954).

I’m not big on romantic movies, but my favorite in that category would be:

True Romance (1993).*

*That’s about as close to romantic as I get, movie genre-wise, aside from my already-mentioned anime favorite, Your Name.

Jim

"Casablanca", for sure.
But what about "Laura"?
Or "My Fair Lady"?
"Dr. Zhivago"???
"Rio Bravo"???
'All Quiet on the Western Front"???
"The Big Sleep"???
I'm so confused!!!

I saw "Escape From New York" back in 1982 when I was twelve years old, and even before the movie was over I regarded it as the most awesome movie ever. Although I no longer have a "favorite" movie, EFNY was my absolute favorite for a few decades. The problem is, when I have a favorite movie I tend to watch it so many times that it loses some of it's appeal. I've seen EFNY so many times that I can't watch it anymore (I know it by heart), but I will always have an affection for it. And I consider Snake Plissken the coolest movie character ever. It was my first "anti-hero" movie, and I loved the concept of a bad guy being the "hero".

Number two on my list is another movie I saw that same year- "The Road Warrior". Another movie I know by heart.

Several of the movies mentioned in this thread would make my all-time favorite movie list.

Yes!!! Those are all great movies!

Along with killgar’s already-mentioned Escape From New York! Although I did feel that the sequel, Escape From LA, sucked.

I love many of John Carpenter’s movies! Some of them could have easily made the tops of some of my genre lists, especially The Thing, which was almost my top sc-fi pic. Here’s some more great John Carpenter movies I love:

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

The Fog (1980); IMO, one of the best “classic ghost story” movies.

Christine (1983)

Starman (1984); I almost forgot about this one, which could also qualify in the romantic genre.

In the supernatural horror category, I’ll mention a few great ones that come to mind at the moment; I’m certain there are more I’m forgetting right now:

The Haunting (1963)

The Legend of Hell House (1973)

The Exorcist (1973)

Hereditary (2018); This movie was a surprise for me. I haven’t liked many horror movies of recent years, due to the obsession with cheap and predictable ‘jump scares’. But this movie was a revelation. Its horror is slow-burn, and the pacing and suspense is reminiscent of some of the very best old-school horror films.

Pulse (AKA Kairo; 2001, Japan)

In the zombie category (if that can be considered its own separate category), my top picks are:

Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

IMO, they are FAR better than the remakes.

There are literally too many great movies in every genre for me to just narrow it down to one single, all-time favorite movie.
