So, we all enjoy our customs, high end productions. Both sharp things and boom sticks.

But, why couldn't we just get by with a SAK, Mora, no name small axe/big hatchet, and a single shot .22?

Whats your favorite woods combo? Over the weekend, I spent a lot of time outside, mainly splitting firewood (chainsaw was brokeded , had to use the circular saw :p). Anyway, when I was cleaning up, I got a lot of bark and smaller pieces. Used the axe throughout. Came up with a good combo of my Victorinox huntsman, my Gossman PSK for curls, and my Estwing No 5. Later on, I took a walk through the woods with my Crosman 1377, the Gossman PSK and the SAK. My Estwing hatchet would be more easily toted. Anyway, I didn't get anything, but had a good time. I have an old Wards store brand single shot .22 that I would like to take out before the end of the winter.

So, whats your favorite woods folder/fixed/axe/rifle combo?

Oh yeah, my favorites. My Ritter Grip or Vic OHT; Gossman WTK (haven't had my Gossman mini Kephart long enough for it to be my favorite, but it is getting there :D), Estwing hatchet and the aforementioned Wards .22.

hhmmmmm.... lets see...:o

i would have to say:

-SAK Camper
-Charlieridge bushcrafter
-GB wildlife hatchet

since i primarily shoot longbows, i would probably take one of those instead of a gun... i do agree, a .22 is a great woods gun... i actually only own 1 gun, a .20 gauge Mossberg..:o though that might change soon.... i have really been wanting another rifle as of late...:D

As most of my time is in the high desert the two small Wetterling hatchets I own stay in the vehicles. Depending on which vehicle I'm driving (I've got packs in each) I have either a Fallkniven F1 or Frost's Clipper for a fixed blade (I keep a Buck 119 in the sports car too but almost never take that car for hiking). My folders include an always present mini-Grip in my pocket along with a SAK Classic. In the packs are either a Vic Farmer or Vic Trekker. Also, keep a Gerber retractable pruning saw in the two larger packs.

I rarely carry a rifle why wandering about but when I do it's either my Nylon 66 or 10-22.

I missed out on a buddy's Mossberg bolt action .410. Might try to trade him something for that next time I see him.

fixed blade DP knives scandi camp master
folder Leatherman wave
axe Estwing (the small one) although I'm looking into a nice axe, a Wetterlings perhaps or even a gb

If I had to pick a long gun over all else..I'd pick mybrothers old savage 24 .22lr/.410

Yep! Definitely could...

But my favourite woods combo so far is the Aurora, a Wetterlings Large Hunter, a Victorinox Farmer and a Puma 1892 in .357. Of course if I am carrying the axe I must not be too worried about weight and it's possible that I would have an M14 instead of the levergun.

Folder - SAK Wenger SI (because I don't have a Farmer yet)
Fixed - Mora 780 Triflex
Axe/Hatchet - Fiskars 14"
Rifle - Marlin model 60FS.

Kinda sad when I actually look at it. All of those, including a scope and sling for the .22, probably didn't set me back $250, yet, I still look at $250 knives and think, "Thats not a bad price". :foot:

I agree that we can do it with very little $$ I would say that my favorites on the cheap would be as follows.

SAK alox Farmer $19.00
Mora Carbon 911 $12.00
Wetterlings Large Hunter $36.00
Rossi 22/410 $99.00

Grand total of $166.00 out the door

IMO all the above items will get the job done.

All I need is this chair, and this lamp.............

Sorry, I read the title and instantly thought of the movie The Jerk. Whatta awesome flick.

Me? A laconico, a sak farmer, dont own an axe yet, and a 12 ga, or the Rossi I just picked up.

Well I would have to say

Folder: Vic Cadet (farmer is coming soone)
Fixed: either my new bushcrafter from Bikermikearchery or my Jeff White patch knife
Axe: Gerber pack axe (in the market for a new axe)
Long gun: old break action single shot 410

Depends, If im a position where I can take an axe, my homemade will come with now that I have it done. If there is no xe coming along.

Wetterlings LHA (maybe a trail hawk)
RAT RC6 (or home made knife)
Spyderco Military
SAK camper or similar.

JK Hiker, Alox Farmer, and Ruger .22(single-six), normally don't carry a hatchet but when I do it's a GB

If I'm only backpacking, I just bring a Mora and a folding saw. But If I'm deep woods camping and think I'm going to make things, or it's cold, I add a GB ax, a GB hatchet, a Vic farmer, and a Cold Steel shovel. If I'm hunting, I use a Remington 1187 12 gage (a 870 is probably a better deep, back woods survival gun, but I'm not in that boat and I think the 1187 is more fun).

Based on what I actually have on hand:

Victorinox Spirit
BR Northstar
Swedish hatchet (brand unknown)
Ruger 10/22

If I'm considering stuff I don't have, then the hatchet becomes the S&N 24" Hudson Bay Camper, and I wouldn't mind trying the Savage Model 24 in .22 over 12gauge.

Vic Trekker
Fallkniven F1 or Landi MPM
Gerber folding saw
Ruger 22mag or Ruger Super Single Six

They all combine nicely for many different tasks and if I'm deer hunting I just grab the Ruger Super Blackhawk (44mag).

As you can tell I'm a Ruger fan too :D

Hi all My favorite set up is this From left to right. My BPA ( Breeden Pocket Axe) My knife ( The Wild Craft ) with the spy capsule( which has a firesteel rod and cotton/pj mix in it) in the handle
The smaller knife (The whittler) and then my sheath that carries the 2 knives plus a sharpener and a matchsafe with firesteel rod, small hooks and line, afew needles, cotton tinder, scalpel blade.:D

Here are couple of pics showing how I carry all this wonderful stuff on my left side the BPA

and on the right side

For a rifle I really like my Ruger 10/22.

Could I get by with my old Estwing axe and swiss army knife and a shrade type hunting knife you bet, did it for years, but with this set up I sure like it a whole lot better. The hatchet I made kicks the snot out of my old estwing hatchet night and day difference hands down. My Wild Craft Knife holds a edge way better and has a 5.5" blade. ( which I love LOL ) and my Whilter knife it whittles so much better than my old swiss army knife ever did and feels so darn comfy in my hand. I would not like to go back to the old days for nothing since making these knives and the hatceht up.

Great post.
Bryan

Vic Farmer
BRKT Mini Northstar
GB SFA
Winchester Model 9422 or Ruger Single Six

Anytime i venture out into the woods for a serious trek I take a backpack. So I carry quite a bit of gear... As far as knives and axes... I have a collins axe I've been using for years and have moded the edge to where it cuts really well. I take my Busse Battle Mistress, Mean Street, And NO-E. I also have a Gerber folding saw in the pack and lash on my barteaux machete. And as far as a rifle... I don't go anywhere long term without my Bushmaster Dissipator. I know that's overkill... but I got in the habit of carrying an AR-15 and so that'll be what's always with me. If I've got my AR-15 I take my Glock 34 with 22lr Conversion Kit on top as a sidearm. I could definately get a rabbit or something with that.

If I'm just taking a walk around the woods around my house (about 30 acres worth)... I take my Estwing hatchet (whose edge I have made wonderful), Spyderco Temperance fixed blade, Busse NO-E, and my Glock 32. Usually stuff most of it on my Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack that has other nifty little survival gear in it. I strap the hatchet to the bottom of course cause it won't fit in the bag.

And I always have my Surefire 6P LED and Inova X5 flashlights, extra batteries, and my Leatherman Charge.

I find it's good exercise to trek with a decent amount of weight... not a crazy amount that will become a burden... but enough to make it noticable. I can carry 50 to 80 pounds all day long and not really have it slow me down.

I've been working on an all-terrain dolly that can carry a lot of gear but be reasonably easy to pull or push. And can be rigged for rasing and lowering with rope. Still working the bugs out of it though.
