I'm thinking about trading an Allen Blade 10" Combat Patrol Bowie for a Newt Livsay HKR.

What do you think? Would the HKR be a good large outdoors knife?

Which do you think is better?

I do not have an Allen Blade knife to compare it to but I have an HKR and find it very useful for the purpose you stated. In fact, I strap it to my Yamaha XT550 when I ride in the desert and mountains here in Idaho. I also have an HI Khukri that I use for this purpose but like the HKR sheath better. I bought the HKR used from a forumite who indicated it came not very sharp and it took a belt grinder to even give it a functional edge -- but it has one now! I feel like I can hack all day long with it without any problems.

I have an HKR as well. It's an excellent wilderness blade. The handle is very comfortable, blade is easy to sharpen (mine came dull, but it took a razor edge) sheath is one of the best. Newts work is top notch.
