Alloy Banding on W2 pic

That's pretty cool Bruce. I like the look of it. I need to get some of that W2 one of these days....

That's cool Bruce, I get the same thing with 52100 if I do everything rite. I was told at blade show 05 that that's a sign of improper heat treat even though they cut better than the ones that didn't have the alloy banding.

Don that's a great pic, looks like wootz or a very high layer damascus.

Was the alloy banding in the steel prior to heat treat or did heat treat bring it out?

How'd they cut?
 
Whew Don you brought em out great! It must be the Parks 50 quench. I use Tough Quench but even before the hardening they are visible with a 5 second dip in ferric cloride. I like the two tone after HT.

I sure dont see it as a sign of improper HT but I havent done any real cutting tests. The edge is very hard and flexes properly.

I just heat-treated three W2 blades today...don't know if I got any alloy banding...but will be on the lookout!
